Two children with bruises and injuries on their bodies and faces were rescued by police from a unit in Rifle Range flats in George Town, Penang. Read more at

George Town OCPD Asst Comm Soffian Santong said the children's mother, 28, and grandaunt, 52, had been detained to facilitate investigations over the suspected abuse.

He said a police team from the George Town district headquarters moved into the unit at 11.15am after receiving a police report at 8am on Friday . "The complainant said he had seen pictures of the two children on social media, believing that they could be abuse victims with injuries on their face."We will investigate the case under Section 31 of the Child Act 2001, which provides for a jail term of up to 10 years or a fine not exceeding RM20,000, or both, if found guilty.

"Those with information can contact the George Town police district headquarters at 04-218 1822 or any nearest police station," he said in a statement. Penang MCA social movement bureau head Cheah Chin Woon, who was also at the site, said he lodged a police report after learning about the incident from a friend.
