CANNES, May 18 ― The Cannes Film Festival opened yesterday with crowded red carpet arrivals, a star-studded ceremony and a call from Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky for the world of cinema to speak out against the war. “We need a new (Charlie) Chaplin to prove that today cinema is not silent,” said Zelensky, referring to Charlie Chaplin's satire of Adolf Hitler at the outset of World War Two in 1939. Dangling from ropes above the fabled Palais des Festivals, workers were unfurling the huge poster for the Cannes Film Festival’s golden jubilee, which this year features an image from The Truman Show . “We must be victorious.   The MMOF’s Screening and Awards Ceremony saw Ahmad and his team walking away with a cash prize of RM10,000 for their short film titled Halfway Down along with a RM30,000 funding to produce a mental health PSA which will be screened at GSC theatres. We need cinema to guarantee this ending, that each time it will be on the side of freedom,” said the Ukraine leader through a live video link from Kyiv during the opening ceremony, marking a sombre note in the otherwise festive proceedings. “We are ready. Event organisers had rolled out the red carpet earlier in the day, as cinema stars, festival goers and oglers gathered for the 75th anniversary event, bringing buzz and glamour back to the French Riviera resort, as well as discussions about the role of cinema during times of conflict. The town hall has just redone everything — the whole place — so we hope it will go well,” said Jeremie Tripet, manager of “L’Avenue”, a bistro just off the main drag known as La Croisette.

The festival kicked off with the screening of zombie film Final Cut , by Michel Hazanavicius, who was joined by cast members Berenice Bejo and Romain Duris on the red carpet. After Cannes was entirely cancelled in 2020 and held under strict health protocols in 2021, most of the world is expected to be represented at this year’s event, which includes a large industry marketplace alongside the festival. The second season of the festival, themed ‘Heart and Mind’, saw CMHW collaborating with GSC to engage more filmmakers and take their work to the big screen. In the opening ceremony, festival president Pierre Lescure handed Forest Whitaker an Honorary Palme d'Or for lifetime achievement, prompting a standing ovation. “An honorary Palme to the artist, the filmmaker, the Unesco ambassador, simply, a citizen of the world,” said Lescure. China is also expected to have a limited presence due to its continuing Covid restrictions. The actor's production company is showing For the Sake of Peace , a documentary on the war in South Sudan. “It is also key in supporting Malaysian arts and film; integral in finding the gems amongst youth filmmakers, giving them the opportunity to showcase their ideas, talents, and craft, raising awareness and putting the spotlight on important stories around mental health. The world's biggest film festival runs from May 17-28 and will include screenings of Hollywood titles including Tom Cruise's Top Gun: Maverick and Baz Luhrmann's musical drama Elvis .
