Businessman acquitted of drug trafficking

GEORGE TOWN: Tears of joy filled the courtroom when a businessman embraced his family and wept for a good minute after he was acquitted and discharged of trafficking over 8kg of methamphetamine more than six years ago.

Ong Tong Chuan, 47, who has been in jail for six years, was seen hugging his family members who earlier seemed anxious as they waited for the verdict yesterday.

“There is no proof that he was distributing the drugs as well, ” he said as he read out the judgment.

He was charged under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, punishable under Section 39B(1)(2) of the same Act, which carries the death sentence upon conviction.
