PETALING JAYA: Malaysia failed to defend the Asean Football Federation Under-19 Championships title after losing 0-1 to Australia at the Thong Nhat Stadium in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, yesterday.

The Aussies exacted sweet revenge as they had earlier lost 0-3 to Malaysia in the group stage.

Even the wily Luqman Hakim, who was impressive in the team’s win against Australia earlier, couldn’t stamp his mark as the Aussies marked him tightly throughout the match. The only real chance that came for Malaysia was in the 16th minute when midfielder Mukhairi Ajmal capitalised on a weak Australian clearance by heading the ball to Muslihuddin Atiq, but the Terengganu winger placed his shot straight to Australian goalkeeper Kai Calderbank-Park.

In the 54th minute, Malaysia could have broken the deadlock when striker Firdaus Khaironnisam took a brilliant shot from outside the box but his attempt hit the bar even though Calderbank-Park was well beaten.
