Bougainville votes on independence from Papua New Guinea

Some 207,000 people will decide over the next two weeks between full independence or greater autonomy.

At least 1,000 people were at a polling station in the main city of Buka when voting began at 8am amid exuberant scenes of singing and dancing that highlighted local excitement over a chance to become the world’s newest nation.
