Those who came for the biennial gathering, which was held in conjunction with Hari Raya Aidilfitri, included kin who returned from the United States, United Kingdom and United Arab Emirates.University media relations officer Asyaaf Syahmie Hasri, 25, said the gathering was supposed to be held in 2020 but it did not happen because of the Covid-19 pandemic."We planned for today's gathering about three months ago and initially just wanted to have it on a smaller scale," he said.
Asyaaf Syahmie - from the fifth generation of the clan - said his great-great grandfather Dukut came to then-Malaya from Sumatera, Indonesia in 1880. "Dukut was also a religious person and used to preach at Masjid India Muslim. He married Halijah, who was the daughter of an imam and they had eight children, consisting of four sons and four daughters," he added.
Also present during the gathering was Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu, a fourth generation family member of the clan, his wife Datin Seri Dr Nomee Ashikin Mohammed Radzi and Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s royal household comptroller Datuk Azuan Effendy Zairakithnaini.
