45 groups to seek PM’s intervention to stop Penang reclamation project

FORTY-five groups in Penang will send a joint memorandum asking Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad to intervene and cancel the Penang South Reclamation (PSR) project.

Penang Malay Association president president Mohd Yussof Latif, speaking on behalf of the groups, said Deputy Prime Minister Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail and Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow would also receive a copy of the memorandum.

“Tun Dr Mahathir’s concern and intervention are necessary as the state government does not want to hear the people’s grouses and wants to continue with the project despite receiving protests from various parties.

“We are confident that Tun Dr Mahathir will give serious attention to this memorandum because he is very concerned about the people’s problems,” he told a press conference, here today.

The Consumers Association of Penang,  4B Youth Alumni, Tanjung Bunga Residents Association and Penang Malay Chamber of Commerce are among the groups objecting to the PSR project.

The reclaimed land is to be sold to finance the RM49 billion Penang Transport Master Plan which is expected to solve the state’s traffic congestion problems. – Bernama, May 25, 2019.

  • All those groups presenting the memo have motives. Most ordinary people of Penang want the PSR Project. The PSR Project is for future development of Penang especially on the island side.

  • Just wonder why didn't they protest when Melaka carried out massive land reclaim projects along the Melaka Baru area and forest city reclamation in Johor!
