KOTA KINABALU: Some 50 of the 152 locations involved in Phase 1 of The National Fiberisation and Connectivity Plan (NFCP) to reduce the gap in Internet connectivity are in Sabah.

Communication and Multimedia Minister Gobind Singh Deo said the locations where the infrastructure would be developed under the initiative are Nabawan, Tenom, Keningau, Papar, Tawau, Semporna, Kunak, Beluran, Tongod, Tuaran, Kudat, Kota Marudu and Pitas.

“In the five-year span, we have a projection and a list of priority areas. The Malaysia Communications and Multimedia Commission has conducted a study to come up with the detailed list of these areas. The NFCP was launched in Sept last year with RM21.6 bil in funding, and aims to boost broadband penetration and the coverage of 3G and 4G nationwide while providing the base to develop 5G implementation.

On the 5G implementation, he said an ongoing study was being carried out, adding that there would be an announcement later with industrial areas likely to get the service first due to higher demand.
