It’s just a ‘courtesy visit’, say sources on Zahid-Hadi meeting

PETALING JAYA: The secret meeting between PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang and Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi last week ended up just "a courtesy visit", say sources.

"Nothing really transpired and issues of Muafakat Nasional were not raised by either party. It ended as a courtesy meeting, as both have not met for quite some time.

"Ahmad Zahid and Abdul Hadi met by themselves, it was just the two of them.

“There was no one else with them during the meeting, which lasted less than an hour,” said one source.

This comes after Perikatan Nasional chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin is expected to meet Abdul Hadi on Monday (Sept 26) to find out what exactly transpired at the meeting.

Muhyiddin had said that he will meet Abdul Hadi to see if Umno agrees to a revival of Muafakat Nasional.

An Umno member, who declined to be named, claimed that Ahmad Zahid said that Abdul Hadi was the one who asked to meet him, but did not state the agenda of his visit.

A PAS leader meanwhile said Abdul Hadi had briefed the top party leaders what happened during the meeting.

"Nothing happened, not what was expected," said the leader.

There had been talk that Abdul Hadi had met Ahmad Zahid recently to see if new life could be breathed into Muafakat, the dying loose cooperation between the two parties which formed GE14 to strengthen the unity of Malay and Muslim political parties.

However, PAS joining the Perikatan coalition in 2020 - which was then composed of Bersatu, Sabah STAR, SAPP and Gerakan - had irked Umno which had always seen Bersatu as its main Malay rival party after the Islamist party.
