THE Road Transport Department (RTD) has denied the involvement of its officers in a ‘flying licence’ scam advertised on social media, RTD director-general Zailani Hashim said last night.

According to Zailani, a social media user had sent him a screenshot of an Instagram account bearing the name ‘Smart Driving Academy’ offering the chance to acquire a driver’s licence for a low fee, without having to attend classes and driving tests.

“This method is often used by gangs using social media platforms to advertise the ‘flying licence’ service, besides using a picture of a driving licence to convince the public to make payments, before going missing.

“The statement accompanying the screenshot also stated that the Smart Driving Academy worked with senior officers in the RTD and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC),” he said in a statement last night.

As such, he said the RTD was investigating along with the MACC, police, Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission and Cyber Security to establish who owns the social media accounts promoting the service.

He added that the RTD was also investigating any internal connections with the gangs.

“Among them is the initiative to develop a system that makes it compulsory to verify the ID of the supervisor or senior officer before any transaction to issue a licence is made, besides monitoring and auditing under the ISO 37001 anti-bribery management system (ABMS).

“The RTD will never compromise with any form of staff misconduct over integrity, abuse of power and corruption, specifically involving the ‘flying licence’,” he said. – Bernama, January 29, 2022.
