26 Mar 2020 / 18:55 H. PETALING JAYA: A huge jump of new Covid-19 cases in the country today sees the total case tally breach the 2,000 mark. The total number of cases now stands at 2,031, after an addition of 235 new cases today. Health Ministry director general Datuk Noor Hisham Abdullah, at a press conference, said that 23 deaths have been recorded, including four today. “To date 45 cases are receiving treatment at the Intensive Care Unit and of those 32 require ventilators to breathe.” Sixteen were discharged today, bringing the total number of patients discharged to 215. Fatalities accounted for 1.1% compared to the international death rate which stands at 4.5%. Noor Hisham said there were three main reasons why people are dying, firstly due to their age, secondly those with underlying health problems and finally, those who seek treatment when they are already severely ill. He said 80 health professionals have so far tested positive for Covid-19 with 39 from the Teluk Intan Hospital cluster. As a precautionary measure, all hospital staff there have been asked to undergo testing for the virus. “Those medical professionals who tested positive were not due to treating patients,” he clarified. “They contracted the virus when attending weddings, gatherings or at other functions,“ he said. For now, all suspected Covid-19 patients are being sent to government hospitals. He said when the time comes where all ICU beds in government hospitals are full, the private sector will have to treat Covid-19 patients. The MOH has emphasised the importance for health workers and hospital staff to follow safety procedures set by the ministry. Standard Operating Procedures for treating Covid-19 patients have also been disseminated to private hospitals and clinics. He reminds all Malaysians to keep to the MCO regulations and follow the ministry’s advice of maintaining social distancing and frequently sanitising one’s hands.
