POLICE have summoned PKR Youth leaders and lawmakers for protesting in front of Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) headquarters in Putrajaya yesterday.

PKR Youth chief Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir said he has been ordered to go to the district police station tomorrow for questioning.

PKR Youth vice-chief S. Thiban and secretary Ahmad Syukri Razab, as well as Batu MP P. Prabakaran, have also been instructed the same.

Police are looking to record their statements over the protest, during which they demanded for MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki’s resignation.

Akmal Nasrullah said: “We will give our full cooperation to the cops, but we urge them to stop intimidating whistle-blowers.”

“We maintain that Azam should go on leave, and will continue to call for action until the prime minister takes this matter seriously.”

Police are investigating the group under the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012.

Akmal Nasrullah said the wing will be handing over a memorandum in Parliament, when a one-day special sitting will be held on January 20.

“We will hold a consultation session with activists, civil right groups and youth leaders, including student activists, before submitting the memorandum, which we dubbed the people’s referendum.”

About 50 PKR Youth members, led by their chief, gathered in front of MACC headquarters in Putrajaya on Monday, demanding Azam’s resignation.

The group also wants the anti-graft agency to be placed under Parliament and an independent investigation carried out into allegations concerning the chief commissioner.

It also handed over a memorandum to an MACC representative.

Azam courted controversy after he told the media that he allowed his brother, Nasir, to use his trading account to purchase shares from two public-listed companies.

He said the shares were later transferred to his brother.

Sungai Buloh MP R. Sivarasa raised the issue in Parliament on December 14, asking whether Azam declared his alleged ownership of 2.15 million in Excel Force MSC Bhd in 2015, and the 1.93 million shares in Gets Global Bhd in 2015 and 1.02 million shares the following year.

Azam said he informed his superiors of the purchases in 2015, and that they raised no concerns. – January 11, 2022.
