MERCY Malaysia needs volunteers for its door-to-door vaccination programme to be launched on June 15.

Covac, or thr Community Outreach Vaccination Administrative Centre, targets people who cannot leave their homes to get to the vaccination centres.

Mercy Malaysia operations general manager Said Alhudzari Ibrahim said medical and non-medical volunteers, including university students and foreigners, are welcome.

“The public is encouraged to volunteer, including university students. Non-Malaysian citizens are welcome to join. Howeverm the opportunity will be given to those who can communicate well in Bahasa Malaysia,” he said.

The programme in collaboration with the Health Ministry will see teams of volunteers going to people’s homes, with each team comprising a medical officer, assistant medical officer or nurse, volunteers and a driver.

The first phase of the door-to-door programme will be in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor starting mid-June, before it is rolled out to other states.

Non-medical volunteers are also needed for awareness campaigns and vaccine registration under the Agen Basmi Covid-19 (ABC) programme, or Covid-19 Busting Agents, a government initiative to reach grassroots communities on the need for vaccination.

The door-to-door programme is part of the PPV Community Outreach House to House Programme, and involves coordination with district health offices, the social welfare department and civil society groups like Mercy Malaysia.

Said said vaccinations under Covac will still be based on registrations via MySejahtera and the website of the Special Committee on Covid-19 Vaccine Supply (JKJAV).

“Vaccination will still be coordinated by the Health Ministry and Mercy will help in delivering the service

“Detection and contact tracing is still on-going and being managed by the Health Ministry,” he said.

Said added that Mercy Malaysia cannot determine the type of vaccine administered under the door-to-door vaccination programme.

Besides rounding up volunteers, Mercy Malaysia is also currently collecting equipment needed to run Covac.

Said added that Mercy Malaysia has also approached the United Nations High Commission for Refugees to push for vaccination among the refugee community as well.
