PETALING JAYA: The number of Covid-19 cases have spiked to three digits again, with 111 cases reported today. This brings the total number of active cases in Malaysia to 858.
Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said of the number, 107 are local infections while four were imported cases.
All four import cases involved foreigners from Indonesia (two), India (one) and Singapore (one)
“Of the local infections, most cases were detected in Sabah with 97 cases reported there. Seventy-four of those cases were from the Bangau-Bangau cluster, 26 of whom were foreigners, “ he said.
Thirteen were from the Fort Lahad Datu cluster, all of whom were Malaysian, while two more cases were foreigners from the Laut cluster.
“The remainder of the cases in Sabah involved eight Malaysians and two foreigners who tested positive during various check-ups on hospital patients and members of the public,” he said in a statement today.
Eight more local infections were reported in Kedah, comprising seven (one foreignor) from the Singai cluster and one case detected in a Severe Acute Respiratory Infection (SARI) patient at Hospital Sultanah Bahiyah.
The remaining two local infections involved Malaysians from Pahang and Selangor, both of whom had a history of travel to Sabah.
However, no deaths were reported today, leaving the number of fatalities at 133.
Meanwhile a new isolated cluster was detected in Johor, involving a ship crew with a history of travel to Singapore.
The latest report brings the total number of infections detected in the country to 10,687.
Meanwhile, 30 cases had recovered and were discharged today. This brings the total number of patients to have recovered to 9,696, amounting to 90.7% of the total cases.
He added four Covid-19 patients were currently in intensive care units, with three needing ventilator assistance.
On the topic of the new isolated cluster, Noor Hisham said the initial case was an Indonesian ship crewman who signed on to the ship in Singapore, on Sept 10.
After exhibiting symptoms such as fever, shortness of breath and diarrhoea, he tested positive at Enche’ Besar Hajjah Kalsom Hospital, Johor on Wednesday.
Since then, 30 of his fellow crewmen have been tested, with one more case testing positive for Covid-19 today. Another 24 crewmen tested negative, while four are still awaiting results.
