BERSATU secretary-general Hamzah Zainudin has defended the legitimacy of his appointment by party president Muhyiddin Yassin, as the party roils from moves to sack its founder and chairman Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

Hamzah was appointed on March 26 to replace Marzuki Yahya, whom Muhyiddin had removed from the post on March 18.

“With (my) appointment all directives or statements issued by Marzuki, who claims to be Bersatu’s secretary-general, are invalid and an abuse of position,” Hamzah said in a statement today.

Yesterday, Marzuki, acting for Dr Mahathir’s faction in the party, removed working secretary Muhammad Suhaimi Yahya from the post after the latter issued termination letters to Dr Mahathir and four other party MPs.

Dr Mahathir has questioned the validity of the termination letters which were signed by Suhaimi.

Besides Dr Mahathir, four other memberships terminated belonged to deputy president Mukhriz Mahathir (Jerlun), youth chief Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman (Muar), supreme council member Dr Maszlee Malik (Simpang Renggam) and Amiruddin Hamzah (Kubang Pasu).

Hamzah’s statement accompanies a press conference he gave today to explain the terminations.

In his statement, he said Muhyiddin had stopped Marzuki from holding the post in the former’s capacity as party president and also as acting chairman, following Dr Mahathir’s decision to resign as party chairman.

Dr Mahathir had quit the party post on February 24 after the “Sheraton Move” – a plot led by Muhyiddin’s faction in Bersatu, together with Barisan Nasional, PAS, Gabungan Parti Sarawak and defectors from PKR, to form a new coalition to topple the Pakatan Harapan federal government.

Hamzah said as acting chairman and president, Muhyiddin had the authority to remove Marzuki as secretary-general and to appoint him (Hamzah).

Hamzah also said Dr Mahathir had presided as party chairman over a supreme council meeting on February 23 when it was agreed that Bersatu should leave PH.

When Dr Mahathir quit as party chairman the following day, and when Muhyiddin became acting chairman, the latter said a decision had been made for the party to leave PH, Hamzah said. – May 29, 2020.
