New facility features rare beluga whale skeleton, focuses on endangered Cook Inlet population.
PORTAGE, Alaska - Over the weekend, the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center opened its newest exhibit — the Matson Ocean Education Center .
“I’m super excited for the education opportunities that are going to come with this building and just what we can do for all the kids in Alaska,” Sarah Howard, AWCC’s executive director, said. The building houses a rare beluga skeleton. The whale, named ‘Quinshi’, is a complete 10-foot skeleton of an eight-year-old beluga whale found near Nikiski in 2019. The whale, according to AWCC, was put together by Kenai College of UAA Extension.
“ is not something you get to see everywhere at all or often anywhere,” Howard said. “So, to be able to be a facility that was allowed to have a skeleton is super remarkable and we’re really excited about it, and we cannot wait to tell the world about Quinshi. ” According to AWCC, the skeleton can be lowered during programs, allowing people to get an up close and personal view of the skeleton.
“I think it’s neat. Just to see one that’s whole and full is just really, really cool to see,” Steve Densmore, a visitor at AWCC, said.
