Intensive care consultant at Limerick University Hospital, Dr Catherine Motherway, said it is currently coping with the demands but it's a 'day to day planning exercise' around staffing.

University Hospital Limerick is one of the country's busiest, dealing with 158 Covid-19 patients today. Staff there were also caring for 19 patients in intensive care.

Dr Motherway believes numbers coming to ICU will remain high for a "good number of weeks to come" and warned that the health system "needs the tap to be turned off" in the community. Dr Motherway agrees we are "approaching the limits of what we would describe as our capacity to surge ... above 350, we would not be delivering the standard of care that we would like.

They normally don't run out of ICU beds or use surgery capacity. There has NEVER been this amount of people in ICU for same illness some people will remain brain dead and never see the truthor accept it

Nothing happened then, they still couldn't cope under incompetent ministers of health and still ongoing to this day

Every health minister so far hasn't dealt with hse, nothing new here, it's a failure for decades and will continue to be under incompetent not fit for purpose pretentious health ministers that haven't a clue what they are doing

How is that different to January 2019 or January 2020 or January 1999... The health system in Ireland has always been just coping.

Every winter the same thing. Hospitals can't cope. Doctors and nurses give out. Government does nothing. Same old story.

Please shut up, same every winter only difference this year is outcome is more deaths (maybe)!

Isn't it like that though everyday. They have to plan. nothing unusual about that at all defundrte

Okay. And what are we meant to do about it?

In other words, they are COPING. On the other hand, special needs children and their teachers are damned and deemed 'non essential' by pathetic unions An absolute smear on this whole sorry affair.

Covid patients transferred across country for ICU bedsA team that travels with the patient includes an emergency medical technician, critical care doctor and nurse We owe these paramedics and nursing staff a deep debt of gratitude. They must be honoured when this is all over. Stop blaming covid on the hse's failure to properly sort out the icu bed situation in this country the last 10 years. None of this is anything new. Main problem now is half the perfectly healthy nurses are off 'sick' twiddling their thumbs for 14 days.

650 Covid-19 patients are receiving critical care, including 214 in ICU650 Covid-19 patients are receiving critical care in Irish hospitals, including 214 in ICU Your phrasing implies that all 615 people are there because of COVID alone and not suffering from any other noteworthy ailments. As you know, and we all know, this is not true. If anybody needs me to, I can go into more detail on why this is so important. Many non COVID illnesses haven’t even been presented yet to casualties yet
