A turf cutter has warned the EU to keep their “hands off our bogs” and to stop “bullying” people in rural Ireland.
The directive had ruled for the bogs in Woodford and Portumna in East Co Galway to be preserved for conservation. “It’s a great day for rural Ireland and rural people. At the time the Irish Government were afraid they’d face huge fines when we were cutting turf.“Private property in Ireland is enshrined in our law and stop bullying people in rural Ireland and come up with other alternatives to preserve bogs.
Gearoid Geraghty, the solicitor who represented the men, added: “These are ordinary, country people and they have been here now on 14 separate occasions awaiting trial.
