A small town in northern Italy which had the first confirmed coronavirus case of the country's surging outbreak is now on effective lockdown. |

A timelapse video recorded in the near-empty streets of Codogno on Sunday afternoon shows there is barely a car on the roads or a person in sight.

The small town in the northern Italian region of Lombardy had the first confirmed coronavirus case of the country's surging outbreak, and is now on effective lockdown. Almost a dozen towns in Lombardy and neighbouring Veneto, with a combined population of 50,000 people, have effectively been placed under quarantine, with locals urged to stay home and special permission needed to enter or leave the designated areas.

At the borders of the affected towns, police in protective masks make checks on people in cars hoping to enter or leave. Italy is battling the largest flare-up of the disease yet seen in Europe, with four people dying of the illness since Friday and more than 130 cases reported.
