On the evening of April 14, 1984, the body of a baby boy was discovered on White Strand, near Cahersiveen in Co Kerry.
Her baby's body, who was stillborn, was found in a field at her family farm, where in a panic, she had left him. Gardaí believed Joanne was the culprit and she was eventually charged with the murder of the baby and family members were charged with concealing the birth of the child. Following the court hearing, her family returned home and searched for the baby, finding it in a plastic bag and reporting this to gardaí.
This 'twins' theory was undermined when blood tests showed that Jeremiah Locke was not the father of the Cahersiveen baby, therefore ruling out that Joanne was the mother of the baby she had been charged for the murder of.The murder charge against Joanne was dropped in October 1984, and a tribunal to investigate the actions of the gardaí involved started in January 1985.
