'Ireland’s TV licence system is irrevocably broken,' Dee Forbes told an Oireachtas Committee meeting today

RTÉ Director General Dee Forbes Image: Oireachtas TV RTÉ Director General Dee Forbes Image: Oireachtas TV RTÉ DIRECTOR GENERAL Dee Forbes has said that RTÉ provides value for money over streaming services such as Netflix and that the existing system for the collection of the TV licence is “broken” at an Oireachtas Committee hearing today.

RTÉ executives are to take a 10% reduction in pay and the board of RTÉ will “waive its fees”. As well as a reduction in staff numbers of about 200 next year, other staff-related savings are to be found. “Ireland’s TV licence system is irrevocably broken and is no longer capable of properly sustaining public service broadcasting or Ireland’s broader audio-visual and creative sector,” Forbes said in her opening statement.

Under later questioning by Senator Michael McDowell, she said one of the top earning presenters has already taken a pay cut in excess of 15% while negotiations are ongoing with the others.

Does Dee Forbes realize that many paying for a TV license are living for a whole year on incomes that are less than the 15% pay cut accepted by one of her presenters? The other domestic tv stations make a profit. RTÉ should be run to the same model.

I think they ignore the market of just 4 million people. They are living in a parallel world with a society of 60-80 million viewers. Same as the Government overpaid compared to UK or Germany which govern 15 to 20 times more people.

Only thing worth watching is probably the Sunday game other than that it’s dung

So is the public broadcast in ireland

I watch the late late toy show. That's the one TV show I watch and it's already entirely paid by product placement. But I still pay my license because I have to. RTE needs to swim or sink, and it's currently sinking. At the very least, sort out the bloody RTE Player!

RTE is irrevocably broken.

Next she be going through the cupboards to see what she could sell next

RTÉ? Value for money?

So is RTÉ...broken!

Dee Forbes- not fit for purpose. She needs to go the way of Aertel.

Yes it's broken, it shouldn't be there in the first place.

Ireland subsides overpaid shit presenters is the issue 👍

Of course it's broken. Make RTE a subscription service. If you want it you pay for it...simple. Now why wont they do this I wonder 🤔

You may miss my ass if you think you're getting more of my money to pay 'celebrities' in RTÉ 6 figure sums for 4 hrs work a week

I'm a tax payer and I dont want to pay for this rubbish. I watch nothing on rte now, sadly. I listen to independent radio. I subscribe to Netflix and amazon.

deeforbes_dee LeoVaradkar make RTÉ a subscription service. Those who subscribe can pay a TV license as they are watching RTÉ. If you don’t subscribe don’t pay because you are not watching the shite...sorry meant content on RTÉ. Well I eagerly await your out of touch answer

Talks ongoing....... WTF? The talks should consist of; Ryan, your taking a 50% pay cut, don’t like it? Jog on then.. 30 seconds max. You can even save time and get Joe, Marion, Ray & Miriam in the Roomat the same time.

I don't watch rte so why should I pay for a service I don't use. Grossly overpaid mediocre on screen talent run by an incompetent management team. Scrap the licence fee and make it pay per view. If it can't operate within its own means then let it die

Yep but rte is still shite with overpaid agenda pushers

They repeat every program over and over.. and just in case you missed it, it will also be repeated on +1. And then watch it again on catch up just to be sure to be sure.. 😂😂

Yes it’s broken, stop charging it all together

RTÉ Go subscription and watch your revenue plummet even further, rte is not value for money. It’s a travesty we’re forced to pay a tv licence.

Funding of Public service broadcaster should come direct from the funds of the government not through this idiotic license system which probably costs more to administer/enforce than they get back. RTE should not be beholden to advertisers promoting unhealthy, polluting products.

Her style of managing the budget she's been given is broken.

'RTÉ provides value for money over streaming services such as Netflix' What planet is she living on? RTE and Value for money are not things that should be in the same sentence. Go clean house and get some new blood in, to take you out of the dark ages.

I think she means ''Ireland's state funded public broadcasting system is irrevocably broken.''

Pay her better to get the crap of there station and overpayed muppets just see what on rte for Christmas its stomach churning

This is typical of Ireland and public money equating to inflated salaries. The Taoiseach should not be paid anywhere NEAR , never mind more that the American president - justify this ? Then there was John Delaneys wage , and as for Ryan Tubridy and Joe Duffy...

Shes missing the point about streaming sites...they are VOLUNTARY and they have content that people actually want to watch.

A super-boomer, thinking that repeats, broken streaming service and irrelevant content is worth paying for and even already better than NetflixUK Get someone young and undiluted in there to run the place 😒

I think she meant RTE broadcasting & programming. If she doesn’t think that’s broke it won’t be fixed rte

Ya. Don't. Say. 🙄🙄🙄

She's sickening.
