The mother of Dara Quigley, a journalist and activist who took her own life shortly after intimate images were shared online without her consent, is calling for stronger legislation around the sharing of such images | Read more:

In 2017, Dara Quigley was detained by gardaí under the Mental Health Act for walking naked in a Dublin street.

"Evidently, offences relating to data protection - whether in the Act of 1988 or the Data Protection Act 2018 - are insufficient to address this issue."The Irish Council for Civil Liberties also attended the committee with Ms Malone.

The garda responsible not named no?

I'm sickened

Images taken by GardaTraffic gardainfo

The CCTV footage of Dara was downloaded by a Garda on camera duty & shared in a Garda WhatsApp group, yet the only time mentions them is when they say “Gardai need more resources for effective technical training”! How can rte be described as Public Service Broadcasters?

This is a disgusting framing of what happened . Intimate? Try abusive or invasive and ffs the fact they were guards is central to the abuse here. Justice4Dara

'After a guard sent around surveillance footage of her'

GardaTraffic gardainfo who do we report this to?

No mention of who took the videos? Irish Pravda.

How come there is no mention of gardai?

'intimate'? It wasn't a private photo taken for a boyfriend it was video footage that he had privileged access to of a woman in the midst of a mental health crisis. She then died. It's a fucking travesty.

It takes actual talent to write a tweet about Dara Quigley's death and not only not mention the Gardai's role in causing it, but actually make it sound like it was caused by the actions of someone close to her. I mean, it's a talent for being the worst sort of person, but still.

An on-duty Garda recorded the cctv footage on his phone and passed it around his mates. They weren't 'intimate' images. It was a weird and dehumanising abuse of power which lead to her death

You didn't mention the video was taken by a member of the Garda, but I'm sure you just forgot right? There's no way you'd purposefully mislead the public, right?

A GARDA DID THIS. A GARDA took CCTV image of her and released it into the public. It's my understanding he has faced ZERO serious consequences for that which lead Dara to take her own life 😠

They were photos of her during a mental breakdown, taken by guards and shared by guards. Why leave the whole point of the case out of your headline

Video taken and shared by another Garda without Dara’s consent and that Garda is prob still working

Gardai having a laugh at vulnerable people and you wonder why no one trusts gardai

Strange how this doesn’t mention it was a Garda that circulated the image. It also fails to mention that no charges have been made against that Garda.

I used to think Gardai were there to protect, not ridicule.....................😣😣

AnGardSiochana

Every other comment is saying this but just to repeat. This is terrible and immoral reporting, protecting the GARDA who obtained footage of her in a distressed state on CCTV and shared them in a GARDAÍ WhatsApp group. Complete and disgusting abuse of power.

Can the Garda be named and shamed (assuming he can experience shame)

Who made the decision to censor any reference to the Gardaí from this report? Was it davidmurphyRTE or did it come from higher up?

She should sue the state.

*Shared by a member of gardainfo

are ye not even pretending to be an objective news source anymore?

By a Guard. That's a really crucial point you seem to want to omit

Private images. Doesn't matter if they are intimate or not, they are private.

Retweet that with 'hours after a garda broke the law by filming cctv footage and sharing it'

SHARED BY GUARDS.

I mean ye could stop being craven bootlickers for thirty seconds, have a little respect and not use couched language to imply the images in question was the equivalent of a candid nip slip caught by a random observer.

Loving the use of the passive voice to protect the gardaí.

“by a member of an Garda Síochána” and one that is presumably still serving.

Ehh, “by a Garda” is the really important point here!

Your tweet neglects to mention the video was taken by an on duty Garda and shared by a garda. this is terrible reporting .

ReadaCronin Or maybe the fucking Garda can behave like protectors of the public rather than dirts !

RebootPod Those charged with policing the acts they’re trying to legislate for have not been held accountable for recording and publishing the content. GSOC not bringing any charges against the Guard that made recording - its horrendous stuff.

Protection against this unlawful digital activity, is a long time coming and it needs to be criminalized urgently. Fines and slaps on the wrist don't work. These perpetrators should be jailed.

CathMurphyTD 'Intimate'? A garda took video of CCTV footage he only had access to because he was a garda of her moments before she was detained under the mental health act by gardai.

CathMurphyTD Without her consent by a serving Garda....... Fixed that for ya RTE without evn a journalism degree under me belt... Eadypeasy

And a promotion fot the Guard.

Agreed, scumbags should not be able to revenge publish in the war against women

If you take naked pics and even delete them they are collected by fishing Apps. If you post a nude, it is always there even for research in future Job applications and travel Visas. bewareofXboyfriends.
