Until now, gardaí have effectively been powerless to deal with people who do not comply with regulations.

Image: Rollingnews.ie Image: Rollingnews.ie SIMON HARRIS THIS evening said he will sign regulations which will give gardaí the powers to enforce Covid-19 distancing measures tonight.

Gardaí have been carrying out hundreds of checkpoints and found that the vast majority of the public have been complying with the government’s recommendations made in mid-March relating to social distancing. However, gardaí were effectively powerless to deal with cases where people did not comply with regulations.

But speaking on RTE’s Prime Time programme tonight, Harris said he would sign the new regulations following a meeting with the Garda Commissioner Drew Harris and the Attorney General. It means that gardaí will now be able to arrest those who do not abide by Covid-19 restrictions, including those who exercise more than 2km away from their homes or people who travel for non-essential purposes.TheJournal.ie's coronavirus newsletter cuts through the misinformation and noise with the clear facts you need to make informed choices. I'm happy with this. I live on the blueway and yesterday was my 1st day out in 8. There was cars parked, people going fishing and running and do on. Past their 2km of home. So if they are infected they are carrying it with them. So I went back inside.

Thanks

I saw so many teenagers with skateboards in the park, and other big group of friends playing football. It's not fair.

Does Ireland not have a constitution? Surely it’s not possible for politicians and police to award themselves powers not seen since the fall of the Third Reich?

And of course these regulations will be scrapped once ths emergency is over yes?

He going to close borders ? Or jacinta from tallaght going to her mobile with her kids the big problem ?

I'm really amazed how Simon has changed his mind back in February he laughed and said restricting flights simply wouldn't work But now were are all restricted

At a time when the Department of Justice is approving early/temporary release for prisoners, under this legislation you can end up in prison & therefore possibly put additional pressure on the prison system. I can see the logic there

👏🏻

SimonHarrisTD this makes not sense at all... but I guess letting the prisoners out early makes space for the real criminals... dog walkers, the highest level of gangster COVID19

The powers legally open to him as per the Act are to 'confer a power on the Minister for Health to make regulations prohibiting or restricting the holding of certain events or access to certain premises'. There's no power in either Act (20/27th March) for him to do that.

Excellent, couples/groups who won't go single file and share the pavement would be a good place to start.

Give 👏 them 👏 pepper 👏 spray 👏 let's see little carona virus Karen say her maaaa let's her do what she wants then 🖕😂

Well done 👍

And while he's at it, allow us to beat 7 shades of shite out of any scumbags coughing or spitting at us

They should already have that power FFS there the law of the land ,you politicians restrict the Garda on every thing ...

In my opinion the idea is good, but I don't think prison is needed in here. A fine should do the job in such situation or instead of it - send such people to work with the ones in need.Covid_19ireland StayAtHomeSaveLives StaySafeEveryone
