Smart Money: Majority of Irish people live in homes too large for their needs

Should those living in large houses after their children leave be encouraged by the State to trade down? Photograph: iStockthan the “family home”. And we do seem to live in bigger homes than the average. A European Commission survey published this week, estimating that seven out of 10 Irish people live in houses which have too many rooms for their needs – under-occupied households in the jargon – with the percentage rising for older households.

It again raises the controversial question about whether “empty-nesters” – those living in large houses after their children leave – should be encouraged by the State to trade down to smaller properties to increase supply in the market.Home ownership trends vary across the EU. The European Commission figures do show that the Republic is a notable outlier, with on average 2.1 rooms in our houses for every one person, compared to an EU average of 1.6 rooms.

Never

No, people have worked hard for whatever they have, it’s wrong to play the shake game.

Can't get them to leave the gaff, so as have the luxury of an empty nest...and they drink all my beer. I predict they'll be here for a while particularly when the post- Covid economic downturn kicks in.

Seriously... I am an empty nester in what would probably be considered a big house. Why should I leave it. I enjoy the space and worked damn hard for it.

What is this dirt? IT peddling nonsense again. What business is it of anyone else if people live in a house that has empty rooms. Would you prefer that those houses were released and remodelled to 'accommodate' 4+ to a room to the benefit of greedy landlords. Jesus wept.

NO 😡

Feck the hell right off!

Will their community and friends move with them?

Smaller homes are non existent in the market as developers are being fuelled by county councils to build apartment blocks for build to rent purposes.

Smaller homes are the scarcest homes ‘available’ right now. In theory, yea, but not when we’ve a housing shortage

As long as I can pay my mortgage I live where I want🖕🏻..... alone in a 3 bedroom house? My choice, my wright....

Away with your bullshit ideas.

Absolutely not.

Barcelona have legislation now for taking control of vacant properties after a period . There's the solutions Ireland don't want to look at because it funnel to the landlords and developers , hardworking taxpayers paid their mortgage all their lives for that home 😡

What smaller houses do you suggest ? If a person has lived in a community all their lives, and there is no provision for step down homes, why should they move? Govt policy should insist that all new developments have a section of smaller units

'Too large' is based on number of rooms rather than size of the home. Get Dermot Bannon in to knock a few walls - problem solved. Fewer poky rooms, more space for wheelchairs and other aids as we get older🤣

Where would they be going, when they give up the houses they worked hard to pay for? And this would be asking people in the lovely retirement part of their lives to leave their communities and support networks - amongst many other factors.

Why should they after paying mortgages and raising families all their lives and choosing that home. Force the landlords vacant or rundown properties to be put to use!! That's the way to go. And rent freezes for next 3 yrs at least. Build social housing. Going after pensioners😡

Piss off with your government propaganda!...
