Police in Britain are investigating "a number of events" in Downing Street and Whitehall in relation to potential coronavirus regulation breaches, Metropolitan Police Commissioner Cressida Dick has said.
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson is facing fresh allegations that he broke lockdown rules by attending a surprise birthday party in Downing Street at a time when social gatherings indoors were banned. Ms Dick defended her force's approach to the allegations surrounding alleged breaches of coronavirus laws in No 10 and Whitehall.
"The vast majority of people have acted responsibly during the pandemic, many, many people - including many Londoners and my colleagues - have made huge sacrifices and they have suffered considerable loss during the pandemic." "My three factors were and are: there was evidence that those involved knew, or ought to have known that what they were doing was an offence."And where there was little ambiguity around the absence of any reasonable defence.
The terms of reference of senior civil servant Sue Gray's inquiry said if evidence emerged of a potentially criminal offence, the work of the investigation may be paused."The investigation being carried out by Sue Gray is continuing," said the spokesperson. "There is ongoing contact with the Metropolitan Police Service."
