Schools could reopen in May or June, says Taoiseach

Mr Varadkar also said: "there is a very good chance" that the Leaving Certificate exams will go ahead and for that reason he would encourage students to continue studying for them.

In relation to state exmainations Mr McHugh said that he and his department "really want to make those exams happen".He added by that he meant "the dates that are defined for this year" and said his department was working towards this. In a statement issued this evening he said his message to students facing exams is that they should keep focused, keep working and try, as much as possible, to prepare as normal for the state exams. The minister praised teachers and students who "have answered the call to remote learning with exceptional flexibility and adaptability".

The union's president, Seamus Lahart said students could "take it as a given" that every effort was being made "by the State Examinations Commission and by everybody in the broader education community to have appropriate arrangements in place for their examinations". It said the most disadvantaged are missing out because they have less support at home to do educational work independently.

Doubt that

Interesting!

Caretaker/acting Taoiseach

Should start online education before too late !!!

Why are all these negative comments. We must be strong and fight with each other in order to win this epidemic

Not going to happen

They have to seriously look at the school holidays, way too long to start with. Longest here than rest of Europe. Ridiculous if they end up being back briefly and off again for two months

If China report a 2nd wave then the relaxing of current lockdown was premature! As for Children going back to school I think we could probably write off this term until September we have not seen the worst yet. It just takes one carrier to infect many. Unless you test everyone

If they go back in June, surely then primary schools anyway would make up lost time in July?

LeoVaradkar ur a a people pleaser!! Don’t have the balls to enforce same measures as uk! The focus is on saving lives and managing the cluster of icu’s that hospitals will see! You can’t even run enough tests and a lot of people are in limbo... r u enjoying ur take out 20% LMFAO

Hopefully back for July and August

It should be on all summer have a mid term for the builders holidays

yea right.

Did they not say April in the statement today? Mid April

Should I laugh? No because in the real life many are going to die...

No they won’t

Yes, they could. But here come the same angry twitter mob that were outside Beshoffs on Sunday.......

No they won't .

Let’s hope they can go back in May or June and we can return to normal.

This man is living in cloud cuckoo land. September at the very earliest. I hope I’m wrong

It won’t be happening; there pushed us out until 20th April, then it’ll be after May Bank holiday. I’m not expecting to be back in the classroom until Sept to be honest

No one, and I mean no one, is going to repeat sixth year. They’re putting so much stress on students and the lack of empathy is unbelievable

i really doubt that this would be safe at all and i would hope that we would only be allowed back after it's 100% clear. it's concerning that other countries have closed schools till around September, but not us? we're not invincible and as a student i am worried

I won’t be sending my child back to school till this pandemic is clear,I don’t care what anybody in government thinks or says and my daughter agrees with me

How are students meant to study when theres a global pandemic

Cancel, go on pre-results, lower points and be done with it! Our lad can't go backas we have very vulnerable young adult at home so too risky.

Secondary School finishes May 31st anyway though

Well I tell ya one thing my kids will not attending school and ya can send who you want to the house. People has to stand together on this it's to early to let kids back to school

We're a couple of weeks behind Italy, haven't seen the worst of it yet. Meanwhile, China and Singapore are already reporting a 'second wave'. 'May or June' sounds highly unlikely.

don’t dare try and make students do the time in school that they have missed? myself and everyone i know is STRUGGLING to keep up with the work that teachers are throwing at us every single day. if we are needed to go make up the time missed, tell us now so we can stop working.

Absolute clown that lad

And stay open till September... said no Muinteoir ever!

*leaving cert students stare into the camera*

This is only the calm before the storm

Stupidity.

They're literally doing what Italy did, 'ah sure hold off we're not that bad yet.' While everyone is praising him for how great he's doing, don't forget when it starts falling apart from the wknd that a lot of us warned you not to trust him.

Silly to do this as it may spike cases again.

For a week then its summer

Or maybe just cancel them like every other country?

I agree,
