Criticism from small business owners to changes from Temporary Wage Subsidy Scheme to new Employment Wage Subsidy scheme, with one small business owner describing it as like 'kicking us when we're down'

There has been widespread criticism from small business owners to changes from the Temporary Wage Subsidy Scheme to the new Employment Wage Subsidy scheme , with one small business owner describing it like "kicking us when we're down".

"For small business owners it's kind of kicking us when we're down. For us, we are just trying to see the rest of the year through. 'People like me and all small business owners across the country are coming in everyday, we're sweeping floors and for me, grinding coffee. So I think it’s going to be tough but we will get through it," he added

The new EWSS extends the definition of eligible employees to now include an individual who is on the payroll of the employer at any time in the "qualifying period" i.e. at any time between 1 July 2020 and 31 March 2021. "There's huge disappointment, anger and frustration among the entire sector of small business owners that thought they were going to be in the wage supplement scheme [but] are now being excluded from the scheme which is keeping doors open and people in jobs.
