Most-read: Rent trap: I’m leaving Dublin as my homeowning dreams will never be realised

I’m 39, I’ve been renting since I left home at 18. I will never own my own home unless I meet someone who can go halves on a mortgage. As long as I’m single, I’ll be a renter. My rent is €800 per month and I just cannot save for a deposit on my own to get a house: all the other expenses eat away at any chance of saving. It is crushing that I’m not enough, as an individual, to have my own front door. I’ve lived in every sort of house, and slept on couches between rentals.

I don’t expect to ever own a house in Ireland, and I have primary and masters degrees. The previous generation are scalping us for all we can afford, wages have stagnated and cost of living keeps rising.

The way forward is to stop companies buying up residential property and to make it illegal to sell the residential properties they own for a profit and also rent cap them. There would be a flood to off load if there's no money for them long term!

FFG DONT CARE - CENTRAL BANK DEPOSIT POLICY MAKES IT IMPOSSIBLE FOR RENTERS TO BUY - ( BIG Thank You👍😘 from FFG to Central Bank ) …Reality is Central Bank is full of entitled FFG Cronies !! HOW will YOU use your Vote ? Tired corrupt FFG & CB .Again ?

Whilst I appreciate its hard for single people to buy, stability is important to working families. Could have looked a bit beyond the woe is me €100k per annum brigade.

I wish I could've fine out about my grandparents never knew then

Move to the north. Belfast is a great city to live in and many lovely towns which are affordable.

All these articles say south Dublin - there are other places in north or inner city that are a lot cheaper and have great neighborhoods

The property market has ruined the country. The government clearly aren't capable of fixing it

Unfortunately you are not alone

Homeownership seems to be a deluded entitlement in Ireland.

€800 rent in Dublin sounds cheap. Most major cities are too expensive to live in. London, New York, Sydney, San Francisco all make Dublin look like a steal - a fact often missed by folk in Dublin

This is the future for my generation. It’s nearly impossible to purchase a house unless your family already has a fair bit of money.
