It has been confirmed that public healthcare workers, who worked in a Covid-19 exposed environment during the course of the pandemic, are to receive a once off €1,000 tax free payment under a plan passed by Cabinet this morning.There will also be an additional public holiday and national commemorative event, in remembrance of people who lost their lives due to the Covid-19 pandemic, which will take place on the 18th of March this year.
There will also be a new annual public holiday at the start of February, from 2023 to mark St Brigid's Day.The aim of the package of measures is to recognise the both efforts of the general public and Ireland’s frontline workers. Last September, Tánaiste Leo Varadkar told the Dáil it was his "strong view" that bonus payments, or extra leave, should not be limited to frontline workers in the health service.NPHET is expected to recommend easing various Covid restrictions when it meets on Thursday, including extending the 8pm closing time for hospitality to as late as midnight.There is also expected to be an increase in the numbers allowed at indoor and outdoor events, according to early indications.
More guests could be allowed to attend weddings, and outdoor sports events could return to full capacity.More restrictions could be eased later on, with the only limitations on premises possibly be scaled back to just checking Digital Covid Certs.
