Image: Shutterstock/nito Image: Shutterstock/nito MINISTER FOR HEALTH Simon Harris has said the government will fully roll-out a public access programme for Pre-exposure prophylaxis , with the aim of reducing new HIV infections in Ireland.
PrEP has been shown to significantly reduce the risk of HIV infection through sex, particularly for those deemed at risk, such as gay and bisexual men, and transgender women, but also for heterosexual men and women. He confirmed that funding had been allocated to the programme in his Department’s budget announcement today.
A recent Irish study, of more than 2,000 gay, bisexual and men who have sex with men , found that 7% of respondents were living with HIV, and of these the vast majority engaged were on treatment and had an undetectable viral load .
HIV can also be reduced by gay men not bumming other gay men in public toilets
