Today's poll: Would you support teachers striking over Covid-19 safety concerns?

Image: Shutterstock/Lucky Business Image: Shutterstock/Lucky Business MEMBERS OF THE Association of Secondary Teachers in Ireland yesterday voted to take industrial action unless the government addresses several issues related to Covid-19 in schools by 30 October.

The issues in question include the need for a comprehensive testing programme, rapid testing and turnaround times, along with resources for schools to ensure continuation of learning if schools are closed or people are self-isolating. The ASTI president Ann Piggott said: “ASTI members are clearly stating that they want schools to remain open for students during this pandemic.

I m a teacher and like many teacher do not want to strike in this hour of need. The ballot was scripted in a way to advocate strike. All we need is proper conditions and work away . Principals and management have done great work. Public should respect teacher input

If it is teacher’s safety concerns then it’s the kids safety concerns too!

My daughter is a nurse in a critical. Even though they are paid crap, had to take holidays to mind their children , completely shafted by the government BUT abided by their morals in a country in turmoil. Not so our teachers. A disgrace.

100% yes. Especially after todays news that schools have received notification to stop using over 50 sanitary products over concerns about their safety 🙈

No never for this reason, I’d for equal pay and for a better quality equipment for teachers and students also support for high risk teachers. Never for testing with an unreliable test

Remember that time there was a poll and similar reaction to the time politicians wanted to claim more expenses because of Covid and associated expenses?......me neither.

Yes esp. Secondary school teachers as pupils don't do social distancing aft school and some teachers vulnerable with vulnerable children and parents who mind their children!

The whole country needs to strike

I would suppose the majority of the people who voted no on this are also firmly against the nation wide lock down preventing house parties etc for the much advertised benefits that it has. Schools aren't large congregations of people I guess😂

No

Yes, your employer is obligated to provide a safe working environment. Teachers are not frontline workers like nurses or doctors, if they feel unsafe in their working environment or conditions then they’re entitled to strike.

Let them off with no full pay and they can get the PUP €350 a week and see how they get on with that

What about the 'most teachers want to get back to school' narrative? This vote suggests otherwise. To comfortable in last Lockdown doing SFÁ and getting paid

Yes

Absolutely No

Clearly being a babysitter is far more important than their health. It's the younger age brackets transmitting the virus.. I have heard reports of students coughing into teachers faces, and doing all the rebellious things possible with masks. So long as they're in school though.

Yes, your employer is obligated to provide a safe working environment. Teachers are not frontline workers like nurses or doctors, if they feel based in their jobs then they’re entitled to strike.

What about all the nurses and doctors.? Can they just strike aswel.?always about the teachers. We all just have to work through it!!!

Any teacher feeling vulnerable due to COVID-19 or having underlying health issues should absolutely be allowed to stay at home but should be put on PUP of €350 pre week

We need to live with covid until we get a vaccine. Would giving them free weekly tests be better?

If this was an isolated incident then 100% ....but they threaten to strike almost annually so have lost a lot of credibility and public sympathy . If the profession is as bad as they make out why are there so many still in it or so many willing to become teachers?

They strike over every other issue so why not 🤦‍♂️

get back to work and be thankful you have a job vile public sector

I would support sacking them.

No way A S T I remind me of the D U P not an inch !

Its all about money.....Offer them more money and watch their covid worries melt away.

Fuck em , i have to work with 50 or so people , boo hoo

Supermarket workers are the heroes working in an uncontrolled environment.

No def not

Yes

Yes

Definitely not

Teachers are waiting days for testing and subsequent results. How long is the testing turnaround for other professions, like athletes? On what do we place more importance? I don't mean for these questions to be rhetorical or disingenuous. I am just genuinely interested.

Supermarket workers have been going non-stop since the start with no issues (and less pay) If teachers genuinely believe they are in mortal danger (as I have heard some claim), it doesn't fill me with much confidence in the numeracy of our teachers.

Absolutely. They’re entitled to a safe working environment like everyone else. Kids too obviously.

There should be an option for half being in the class, and half learning from home to reduce the capacity. They tried to ram rail this thing through and it hasn't worked clearly

No. Stfu and get back to work. It’s not a job it’s a calling. Remember?

Schools should be closed for a proper and complete brief lockdown period otherwise we are just faking trying to deal with Covid

What about the poor children I’m done with this testing nonsense. If someone is sick can they not just stay at home in bed and let everyone else get on with it the way it’s always been

Wait till you see the poll change as the teachers get themselves out of the bed.

The government wants them to strick - more people isolating little cost to state! Shutdowns don't stop viruses they simply make poor people poorer create more debt for the young with nothing to show for it leave less money for health care and will clearly reduce life expectancy.

Hell yes. They have the power to shut down the economy and they should use it until they get adequate PPE, safety and pay. Norma Foley does not answer their questions and does not make them feel safe.

Absolutely! Why on earth do we expect teachers to become front line workers! I made the choice to homeschool this year as my partner is considered high risk. At least I have been afforded this decision, many vulnerable teachers/family members have not.

Covid 19 is all but gone!!!!

NO.

The mere notion that teachers would care about public opinion when it comes to their own safety is laughable. All this media & social media commentary is just gas. Huge swathes of society safely working from home or on PUP. Teachers are *rightfully* not interested in your opinion

Yes defo!

How about a different question? Do you want your child to be educated in as safe an environment as possible?

Nope

What I would support is the government making sure they’re safe

Nope, I've worked since day 1 of this pandemic. Plenty of people out there working, they should do their jobs

Yes, FF,FG have been driving our education into the gutter for decades like the health system and its in bad need of better funding for teachers ,reduce class sizes etc. It's one of the corner stones of civilization and should be valued and respected!

Teachers should be ashamed. Allowing children to sit with windows open in the freezing cold and some not even allowing the kids to wear jackets. And sure they want a strike, more paid leave while the country is on its knees. They want to get over themselves

bfitzgerald2009 Quill_I_Am1 brianoh91 what do we think? Previously noted that closing schools and remote learning was off the table however now that TUI and teachers want to protest, which will result in schools being closed I assume, is it ok?

Why are you putting up silly polls like these just to allow for repetitive teacher bashing!!

No logic to locking down the country and leaving schools open. An SME with a fee customers at a time is much lower risk than any school.

Let them go on covid payments n see how long they strike for

Why are so many people not supporting the teachers? Surely health comes first for teachers & students , unless they just want a babysitting service 🤔
