Outrage at behaviour of Stephen Donnelly as health minister urged to show more respect in Dail

Stephen Donnelly has come under fire for his conduct after he was accused of showing a lack of respect to the sitting chairperson of the Dail.

The Health Minister has received swift and severe backlash online after he insisted on responding to a query in the Dail despite being told his speaking time was up. After being rebuked by Leas-Ceann Comhairle Catherine Connolly for his conduct, Mr Donnelly appeared to mutter "unbelievable" under his breath as he took his seat.

"You don't tell the Ceann Comhairle what you're doing," Ms Connolly told the Fianna Fail TD after he pushed for enough time to respond to a point put to him by another politician."Now, if you seek permission by way of exception, I might accede to that. After being given an extra 20 seconds, Mr Donnelly attempted to point out that the Leas-Ceann Comhairle – an Independent TD – was herself given time to respond when she was sitting in the Dail.

Online, one called the Health Minister a "plonker", while another accused him of cursing under his breath. The drama comes after Mr Donnelly last night told TDs he expects up to four million people could be vaccinated against Covid-19 by the end of September. The Government is expects to receive around 3.7 million doses from April to the end of June and another 3.8 million between July and September.
