Mary Lou receives most Dáil votes, but no Taoiseach has been elected today

Image: PA Image: PA SINN FÉIN LEADER Mary Lou McDonald has received the most votes to become the next Taoiseach in the Dáil today.

The Social Democrats abstained from today’s vote – likely the first of many votes for the next Taoiseach in the coming weeks, if not months.

I really hope this leader becomes next Taoiseach. She will bring a new form of leadership to this country.

People had better start getting used to it. Women's and SF's stars are both in the ascendant. Patriarchy and duopoly are out. Matriarchy and polyocracy are in. To paraphrase ex-US Pres Barack Hussein Obama (BHO): 'It's been a long time comin'!'

A US / French style presidency would avoid this kind of stalemate in future. A move away from aping British institutions might be good for us.
