Ireland Headlines News

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's efforts to break the impasse over Brexit's Northern Ireland Protocol have been dealt a blow by Boris Johnson.

The former premier warned that dropping the Northern Ireland Protocol Bill - which would empower the UK to unilaterally scrap parts of the treaty - would be a"great mistake".

A senior government source said:"If we can find a way to satisfactorily resolve the issues with the Protocol then you wouldn't need the Bill. But we haven't resolved them yet." Mr Johnson negotiated the protocol, which created economic barriers on trade being shipped from Great Britain to Northern Ireland, as part of his Brexit deal, but later turned against it.

Eurosceptic backbenchers will be angered by any compromise with the EU, particularly over the oversight role of the European Court of Justice in Northern Ireland. But Mr Sunak can rely on Labour's support in a Commons vote, as Keir Starmer took the unusual step of offering it.

StevieMcCaffery He has a face that it is 'oven ready'!

The great spoiler. It has also been claimed that he scuppered Ukraine-Russia peace talks last April. Not that he really cares about NI or Ukraine. He just wants to weaken Sunak and boost himself with a view to returning to 10 Downing St.

duponline will be consumed by EU once they agree and will be slowly phased out. There will be no hope for anyone's sovereignty. BorisJohnson is correct, NEVER trust EU. Irish sovereignty will also be over.

What a muppet 🤡

I thought Brexit was 'oven ready'. Anyhow, NI has the best of both worlds not that you'd know it from the screeching from the maniacs in the DUP.

Johnson needs to be quiet, the adults are talking. He lied, he helped destroy our delicate political balance. Anything he says now is still just to further his personal ambitions. 📣THIS IS TOO IMPORTANT 📣 Please don’t carry this story, ignore him as the irrelevance he is.

Boris is right. .u can't trust the EU. Learned from experience.

Johnson lied to the people of NI on camera & now is sticking his ore in when people are trying to clean up his mess.

What is the Northern Ireland protocol?EU-UK deal was hammered out in wake of Brexit but has proved controversial Don't believe all you read. It's simply a device which Unionists use to avoid sharing power with SF holding FM role.. Great little explainer - clear, concise, non-partisan. This is what the UK government should have used to make explain to all citizens before the Brexit referendum.
