Opinion: The government should commit to installing solar panels on 100,000 homes – free of charge – over the next two years

TODAY, THE GOVERNMENT is expected to finally move to amend planning rules that restrict the installation of solar panels on the roof of homes, schools and businesses.

The changes are welcome but long overdue. The review of our planning laws began in 2019 – the same year Ireland declared a climate and biodiversity emergency. Yet, it has taken an energy crisis, three years later, to eventually spur the Government into action. In effect, the Government has solved a problem of its own design. It has finally acted to amend its own very restrictive planning rules – something that was always in its own gift to do.

If this were to change, and every suitable home in Ireland had solar panels, households would save hugely on their electricity bills – by as much as a third of the annual cost. Given the rising costs of energy in 2022, that could be up to €1,000. In our alternative budget, the Social Democrats called on the Government to realise this potential and commit to installing solar panels on 100,000 homes – free of charge – over the next two years.

Paid for by the taxpayer.

A lot of the basic instillation can be done by homeowner, the connection by electrical firms. Indeed some offering install with no up front payment, pay over 5 or ten years. Its not as impossible as it sounds.

'free of charge' = 'funded by tax money stolen from hard working individuals'. Just return the tax and if solar panels are a good investment, we will spend money on them. centralisation is the death of human society

Nope the warehouses of solar panels that can’t be recycled is enough top climate activist discovered this recently it’s a lot worse for the planet

And the Chinese will continue to open 10 oil and coal powered power stations EVERY SINGLE DAY to power the increase demands in the the products the west needs to buy cheaply from them in order to attain this green utopia...utter pie in the sky Greens nonsense....

There is no substitute for reliable and plentiful fossil fuels of which Ireland has in super abundance off shore. We need to urgently start recovering this FFuel to ensure our very food, heating and power supply for hospitals etc.

Lots of taxpayer's money to be given to 'businessmen'. Green policies enrich some businesses, increase our taxes, make us poorer & make our lives more difficult. Ireland has huge National Debt. It spends billions giving away money on foreigners. Adding more National Debt is nuts.

And what will power these houses at night?

Solar panels is more bullshit green energy that doesn't work most of the time and costs a fortune. We should be bringing our oil and gas online. You can't power a country with bullshit green energy.

In other words people who can't afford their own houses get taxed more so layabouts and tight arsed rich green party supporters get free stuff under the guise of a higher purpose.

That's our money

This TD reckons that Irish farmers should cut dairy and beef drastically so we can become self sufficient in fruit and veg, and wipe out all those Dutch and Spanish glasshouses

Installers already making 40% profit margin.

Can I swap my free panels for a 🦄 ?

Jennifer reckons there's enough tradesmen to carry out these works on 192 houses per day. God of almighty.

Who knew there were thousands of skilled & trained workers sitting around to install solar panels?

I’ve been saying this for years

How many workers should be diverted away from building houses to do this ?

Toxic Chemicals in Solar Panels: Cadmium telluride, copper indium selenide, cadmium gallium (di)selenide, copper indium gallium (di)selenide, hexafluoroethane, lead, & polyvinyl fluoride. Silicon tetrachloride a byproduct is also highly toxic:
