Labour Senator Ivana Bacik says the 2004 referendum has caused needless suffering and she’s asking the Government to back a new Bill addressing this issue.

Ivana Bacik AS 2020 DRAWS to a close, I am in awe of the sacrifice made by people living in this country to shield their family, friends, neighbours, healthcare workers, retail staff and others from the coronavirus.

For those who don’t know, the 27th Amendment removed the automatic constitutional right to citizenship for all people born in Ireland, leaving it up to the Oireachtas to legislate to regulate citizenship. However, these statistics included babies born to a non-national mother and an Irish father. So too did they include babies born to migrant parents who were nationals of another European Union member-state and who, therefore, benefitted from EU citizenship and could remain regardless of whether they were a citizen of this country.

Serving this deportation order opened up the risk that Eric could become stateless – a scandalous but inevitable result of the laws we have. Ironically, under Chinese law, a person born in China to stateless parents or parents of uncertain nationality who have settled in the country receives automatic citizenship.

I personally think that the current citizenship laws are fair. If your parents have stayed in the country for a no. of years before giving birth, then the child qualifies for citizenship. Citizenship just based on birth will lead to birth tourism.

Failed politician...why is she given any oxygen for her useless communist ideals

Delusional from the unelectable ivana

Not debating the rights and wrongs here but suggesting it passed by a margin of 58.34% is (deliberately?) confusing (misleading?). Why not simply state it was 79% in favour, 21% against and take it from there

Get this out of the passport then

This article should be reported for containing factual inaccuracies TwitterSupport jack The 2004 referendum was passed by 79% and not 58.34%. It was passed overwhelmingly. This tweeted urgently requires a warning label ⚠️ yoyoel

Agreed and should be nurtured to deliver great things for society as best we can. Every little helps and everyone has it in them to contribute albeit in different ways.

The sooner dual and multi citizenships are done away with the better. Nobody should be a citizen of multiple countries. If a foreigner is born here let him/her choose citizenship but no relations shud get automatic citizenship just because a family member chooses different.

Housing department said impossible to end direct provision by 2023. Unless at expense of vulnerable eu or irish citizens. Labour party closed down bedsits in dublin. Now they want to create a big pull factor which is anti constitutional?

We voted on this already and said no.

It depends on how long the parents are resident in Ireland

A lot of tans in this comment section. My personal favorite argument is 'let's fuck over everyone so we can stop a few from playing the system' what a way to manage a house.

Ceadaíodh an 27ú leasú ar an mBunreacht le 79% i 2004. Teastaíonn an pairtí Lucht Oibre anois go ndéanfaí é seo a aisiompú Ach is é ‘Jus sanguinis’, ní ‘Jus soli’, an gnáthrud ar fud an chuid is mó den domhan seachas Meiriceá Thuaidh agus Theas

This rule was manufactured in the US by an intentional misinterpretation of our Constitution. It has caused most of our immigration problems ever since.

But Ivana, you don't understand, they're not 'special' like Irish illegals.

No. We had a referendum on this

I agree with the article by Ms Bacik.

Bacik: unelected by the population +pushed for late term abortion. babies that are now left to die on trays with real Drs begging for palliative care. nation wrecking Czech. as if she cares about children.

And by proposing this she knows dam well minors wouldn’t be able to stay without parents or guardians so in turn they’ll be right to stay! It a no from me!!

6.7k preborn children weren't born in Ireland last year! Mustn't have belonged? Why the materno-centric/post-natal preoccupation. Elected Sen's represent -1% of state electorate. Can't dictate 99% policy. Hardly paradigm democracy. TCD/IRL - not coterminous.

Anyone North or South born on this Island is Irish if they do not want to be Irish I suppose they should go somewhere else.

Bacik has pushed as hard as possible to abort Irish children and now bring a pipeline of replacements into Ireland. Does she advocate this for her ancestoral homeland of Judaea? Of course not.

Can the child not apply for citizenship when they turn 18 as they will hold an Irish birth certificate

Not according to the Irish people

Anchor babies and their parents don't along here. The people were quite clear on that.

This is complete lies and she knows it. Total fairytale stuff to suggest 71% of people are in favour of this when 80% were against it in 2004. The fact is, if she believed 71% would support this bill then they’d be calling for another referendum, not undermining our democracy.

Have a Referendum

labour Deport Ivana Bacik

I think all children born in Ireland should be given Irish citizenship. However their parents should not then get right of residency based on having ‘Irish Born Child’ I feel this is where the issue arises

Would it not be more advisable in order to avoid opportunistic chancers that the parents be resident in Ireland for seven years?

Our hospitals can barely cope looking after our own people, let alone those coming here to milk the system.

No thanks
