Yes if you have a big income, but those on low incomes do well by international standards

For those in the middle, the tax burden in Ireland is also significant when compared with international trends. Photograph: iStockPhototoo high? Instinctively, we all might argue that we pay too much tax, but it’s worth considering the question in the context of international norms.

Biz The high taxes will eventually drive high earners elsewhere. Netherlands offers tax payers incentives to move there and we just add more on. The top earners are contributing the most income revenue to government coffers….big drops would be big lose if companies move.

Biz Well someone has to keep refugees in hotels while they fly back home for the weekend..virtue signalling for our great and good doesn't come cheap.

Biz Income tax is low for people who have no income! What a big brain take this is

Biz Absolute bollox what an insult to people struggling

Biz And if you're a FAKEUGEE this won't bother you because you'll get everything for free at the expense of the taxpayer.

Biz No point saying the lower earners in other countries are paying tax so they should in Ireland. In other countries they have proper services for their taxes so earning less and paying a margin of tax isn't the same burden.

Biz Well if you consider €36800 a large income….

Biz They always compare services available in some European countries but never tax levels. Denmark has 7 tax rates I think starting at 12k.

Biz The middle and high earners have to make up the shortfall of taxes of those under 25k. In Denmark, Germany, Sweden and others, those earning 25k ish pay 4x the taxes.

Biz

Biz Is this a rhetorical question?

Biz This is about a lot more than taxation of pay at source. Almost everything we buy and almost every service we pay for is heavily taxed. We are up to our throats in duties, levies, and taxes.

Biz Is this taking into consideration the tax on everything else as well as your income? Every single thing we purchase has extremely high taxes. Taxed out of existence

Biz Hmmm, what else do we pay tax on?

Biz Yes full stop ...

Biz How is €37k a large income when the rent or mortgage is paid? But that’s the income level at which you hit top rate of tax.

Biz Ssshhh don't tell the lefty, south Dublin accented, virtue signaling clown class that, as they all believe, except themselves, that anyone earning more than them should be taxed out if existence

Biz Those six packs and grey tracksuits aren't gonna pay for themselves

Biz Hell yeah

Biz Ireland has one of the highest rates of personal tax in Europe. But that ignores employers PRSI which arguably makes it the highest. We also have high vat but we often ignore the government levies charged on many goods such as Cars, Alcohol and Cigarettes.

Biz Define large income. The middle earners pay well over the odds. That’s why fiannafailparty and FineGael are doing so shit. Tax the workers to give to everyone else

Biz For a country that is the 6th wealthiest country in the world, it sure doesn't feel like it to me, from airports, hospitals, schools, healthcare, the country is second rate at best

Biz No

Biz Sadly a lot of EU nationals and South Americans are working in jobs where they are considered self employed and do not realise the need to file tax returns on their income. I had to point this out to a Romanian house cleaner, as he just was taking the money and not paying taxes.

Biz It is, without doubts, question is where all the taxes are going, HSE its a disaster, you have more chances if you treat yourself home, roads...hm...which roads cause there are no roads, just potholes, long list. The only great thing in Ireland is the amount of welfare 😉

Biz What’s classed as a large income? I don’t class mine as large and I pay almost half in tax and done get Feck all in return. It’s disgusting.

Biz It's also a kip 😁

Biz Oh no sure the 'rich' pay no tax at all if your to believe the loonie left

Biz Squeezed middle if you earn over 50k, and you are entitled to nothing, including 'affordable housing'. Make a decision when you are young, if you get welfare its better to stay on it

Biz When you start making 40k you quickly realise how the Irish Government pays for the social welfare state and the 12.5% corporate tax. TheSqueezedMiddle

Biz my average income doesn't get m past the IT paywall but a majority pay 33% taxes on avg, but we get limited services, in denmark, you pay 40% and get amazing services

Biz Omgggg seriously 35k is not high income which once over that your paying over 42% income tax! Who writes this shit

Biz No, Finland is.

Biz There needs to be fundamental reform of the tax system to increase taxes on wealth and the wealthy! MichealMartinTD Paschald MaryLouMcDonald TaxTheRich

Biz Another widening of standard rate tax band will help and an increase in tax credits to match inflation 👍

Biz Entering the higher tax rate at the level it’s currently at does not mean having a ‘large’ income. LeoVaradkar promised workers would be rewarded for getting out of bed. I’m not seeing it, the squeezed middle is now the completely strangled middle! Reward workers!
