Around 144 flights have been affected so far, a spokeswoman for airport operator AENA said, adding it was unclear how long the airports would remain closed.
Four flights to Dublin Airport have been cancelled, along with an Aer Lingus flight from Gran Canaria to Cork Airport. Known as "calimas", the sandstorms form when strong winds whip up dense clouds of sand from the Sahara and carry them across the 60 mile gap to the Canaries.
The situation has improved this morning with the regional government ending the status alert for high winds. Passengers are still being advised to check with their airlines
