Michael Gove, the British government minister overseeing the Brexit talks, made his comments while visiting Northern Ireland today.
The UK left the EU on 31 January but the main terms of its membership remain in place during a transition period until the end of this year, during which time both sides hope to negotiate a new free trade deal. Mr Gove also spoke about how a first meeting between the new Taoiseach Micheál Martin and British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, planned for earlier this week had been postponed because of the death of John Hume. He said it was appropriate that priority was given to remembering "an amazing figure in Irish history".
Under the terms of the UK's Withdrawal Agreement with the EU, the British government has to put in place a system to document the flow of trade between Northern Ireland and Britain, in order to avoid a hard border on the island of Ireland.
