Coronavirus: Ireland 'getting closer' to lockdown as people flout life-saving rules, expert warns

An immunology expert last night warned Ireland is “getting closer” to lockdown measures due to people flouting life-saving rules. The Trinity College Dublin academic told the Irish Sunday Mirror: “You don’t put in place draconian measures immediately. Some people abide by the rules but others aren’t, as I saw with an example of people congregating in Dun Laoghaire.

However, the lockdown enforced on Italy has not proved as effective as the death toll has escalated and soldiers were drafted in to enforce restrictions. “The latest statistics for Eurocontrol show that on Friday, flight movements at Dublin Airport were down almost 33% compared to the same day last year.

An Aer Lingus spokesman said the airline had “implemented a significant increase in capacity in order to assist guests returning from Spain and the Balearic Islands between March 15 and March 21.
