Beijing has imposed a strict 14-day isolation for all returnees - Yvonne Murray writes about her experience of home quarantine in the Chinese capital

China is reporting a surge in imported cases of Covid-19 among thousands of Chinese nationals and expats returning home as European countries lockdown.

Airline ticket prices soared. We scrambled to find a flight and were lucky to get the last few available seats via Singapore. We filled in health questionnaires and signed declarations on our travel history. The process seemed to drag on forever. We finally arrived at the gates of our compound. A guard station had been set up and there was more paperwork to fill out - including a declaration that we would observe quarantine for 14 days. My husband arrived some time later and our quarantine began.

Kind neighbours shopped for us. Deliveries, including piping hot dumplings from the local restaurant - the ultimate comfort food for children who've grown up in China - landed on our doorstep. We looked out of the window one afternoon to see local officials sticking a notice across our front door and sealing it shut with tape.

We were instructed to stand well back and close the internal door. You can't be too careful I suppose. For one hour a day, the sun streams through a window of our house, lighting up the upstairs bathroom, Newgrange-style. I made the children sit for a few minutes in the little shaft of light. As they were spending 24 hours a day indoors, I reasoned, maybe some sunshine would do them good.

yvmurray Runs to Europe in the middle of pandemic possibly bringing it with her. Pandemic follows her, so she runs back to the country of origin as they have it under control, perhaps bringing it again with her. Quarantined at home. Cries about cold dumplings.

yvmurray They were asked to have a home quarantine for a good reason! Irish gov asked people to do 14 days self quarantine if they travelled back from Italy, some still doesn’t listen. It’s for the safety of others. They chose to go to China! Tough it up!

yvmurray Read her story. She left China with her family. Traveled to London in the middle of a.pandemic then opted to travel with her children back from London to China in the middle of a pandemic. In Ireland she would be asked to self quarantine for 14 days, in China they make sure.

yvmurray It's how it should be. Anyone who has the virus, as in someone under home quarantine, should not be leaving under any circumstances. Like a crime scene, you tape the exits so you have proof if someone enters. Food deliveries to be done through an open window to protect all.

yvmurray And now gilead scientific and the chinese in cahoots about the vaccine it’s all go in g down

yvmurray Even Nazi Germany wasn't this bad.

yvmurray RTE are only showing this to groom us for the ''next steps''

yvmurray When this virus outbreaked in Wuhan, people were asked to stay at home, they received food , water, medicine and everything they need sent by volunteers, even trash were dumped by volunteers...it really works!

yvmurray It's real prison 🤣🤣 Hope you stay safe 🙏

When this is over come home to Ireland, human rights in China is abysmal.....could they arrest you for writing this?

Yes, while restrictions have eased in the rest of China, Beijing is different. Some animals are more equal than others in China, and the animals in Beijing most equal of all.

I also live in Beijing. These strict measures, while annoying and difficult, have prevented catastrophe in this city. 22 million people, a city where it’s usually impossible to social distance, has been spared the worst because of these measures.
