Workers and their families marched for what they say is a fear for their future livelihoods.

Over 500 people attended a rally in Shannonbridge, Offaly to protest at what they say is a "growing crisis" for workers at Bord na Móna.

There were calls on election candidates to make the so-called "Just Transition" to a low carbon economy a priority in the next Dáil. Retired colleagues also marched to highlight concern about the security of their pensions. The harvesting of peat will cease in 2027, but the ESB decision to close two peat burning power stations at the end of the year came as a shock to local communities.

Unions representing the workers are calling for investment in areas like retrofitting and renewable energy production to address the shortfall in jobs and assist with the switch to a low carbon economy.
