President Michael D Higgins said policies imposed during the financial crisis facilitated 'the rise of euro-scepticism' and 'exclusionary forms of nationalism'

President Higgins has said he believes the good relations that exist between Ireland and Britain will continue "no matter whan happens" in relation to the ongoing Brexit negotiations.

"As well as that east and west, that there would be minimum disruption to trade and that's to the benefit of both the United Kingdom and ourselves." Mr Higgins' visit to Cyprus marks the first State visit to the island by an Irish President since President Mary McAleese in 2006. In a wide-ranging speech, the President raised concerns in relation to climate change, the challenge of migration and the dangers posed by the growth of "individualism without social responsibility".

Subtitles🤣😂🤣

Some sanctimonious and bitter replies on this thread from people who speak for almost nobody other than themselves. If one judged from Twitter one would assume they represented a significant strand of opinion in Ireland. They don't.

Did the audience understand him? Coz I sure don't! When it comes to spoken English - I like it kept simple. Rich & fruity? Only in novels.

At least he is optimistic!

The subtitles are wrong.

Pain In the arse how many more years of this nonsense do we have

Nothing wrong with nationalism.

Says the guy who signed the Water bill into law on Christmas Day...🤪

Agreed in Ireland at least Lisbon re run opened the door and the fiscal terrorism levelled at the Irish people blew the hinges off. Demands where made and the Irish government followed the script word for word... nearly water blameausterity brexit

Our thought for the day from the hobbit.
