The 60-year-old was convicted of five charges in December for recruiting and grooming four girls to have sexual encounters with Epstein, then her boyfriend, between 1994 and 2004 following a month-long trial. Before imposing a 20-year sentence, Judge Nathan summarised the cases of several of the victims, including Jane and Kate. Read More: Timeline of events as Ghislaine Maxwell is sentenced in New York She said Maxwell and Epstein used a "playbook" over the years, and the result was "incalculable" damage to their victims. Maxwell (60) was convicted in December 2021 for recruiting and grooming girls to have sexual encounters with Epstein, then her boyfriend, between 1994 and 2004. "The sentence I impose must reflect the gravity of Ms Maxwell's conduct," she said. Wearing a prison-issued uniform, she spoke only to confirm she had read the pre-sentence report and discussed it with her legal team, saying:"I did have the opportunity to read it. “A substantial sentence will send an unmistakable message that those who engage in the sexual abuse and trafficking of underage victims will be held accountable by the law. In the Tuesday hearing in Manhattan federal court, Ms Farmer, now a psychologist, said her experience being exploited by Maxwell “resulted in significant shame” that sometimes left her feeling like she wanted to “disappear.

Judge Nathan added: She called the crimes "heinous and predatory. Victims Sarah Ransome, Elizabeth Stein, Annie Farmer and the accuser known as"Kate" were all present in the courtroom, as well as controversial juror Scotty David - who prompted calls from Maxwell's counsel for a retrial after he failed to disclose he was a victim of sexual abuse. In December, a jury convicted Maxwell of sex trafficking, transporting a minor to participate in illegal sex acts and two conspiracy charges.” Before she was led away, Judge Nathan told Maxwell: "A sentence of 240 months is sufficient and no graver than necessary." She entered the courtroom earlier today draped in a navy jail uniform with shackles around her ankles and stood motionless as the judge took her spot on the bench. She was also found guilty of transporting a minor with the intent to engage in criminal sexual activity and conspiracy to commit sex trafficking of minors. And Maxwell spoke in court, calling Epstein a "manipulative, cunning and controlling man" who fooled everyone in his orbit, and said she was "sorry" for the pain that his victims experienced. Maxwell, wearing a blue prison uniform and a white mask to conform with coronavirus rules, sat quietly before the sentencing, looking ahead as Assistant US Attorney Alison Moe recounted how Maxwell subjected girls to “horrifying nightmares” by taking them to Epstein. "It is the greatest regret of my life that I ever met Jeffrey Epstein," Maxwell said. In their sentencing submissions, prosecutors urged Judge Nathan to impose a sentence of between 30 and 55 years for Maxwell's crimes. In calculating the guidelines range of 188-235 months, Judge Nathan agreed with prosecutors that two women who were not initially named in the July 2020 indictment against Maxwell were proved at the British socialite’s monthlong trial to have been victims.

The sick pair's victims, including Virginia Guiffre, pre-released victim impact statements earlier today that were later read in court. Giuffre today said Maxwell "opened the door to hell" by introducing her and others to Epstein. Throughout the trial, the court heard how she imposed a"culture of silence. Another woman admitted she considered jumping into shark-infested waters to avoid having to be raped again by the vile paedo. Maxwell's siblings - who have been supporting her through the proceedings - were seen arriving at the New York court ahead of sentencing today.. Earlier this year, her brother Ian Maxwell defended his sex-trafficker sister in an ITV documentary. “Those choices were hers and they have to have serious consequences.

He said: "It’s just wrong. Judge Nathan said she agreed Maxwell had told staff at Epstein's Palm Beach residence in Florida to be"blind, deaf and dumb. I have devoted a lot of my time as have my brothers and sisters to help Ghislaine. "We believe her. Throughout the morning session of her sentencing hearing, the defendant frequently played with her hair and adjusted her mask. We love her and we hope that she will get the justice that she definitely deserves." Her accusers came face to face with her on Tuesday as several women read victim impact statements to the court - describing her as a "manipulative, cruel and merciless person. Epstein was found dead in his cell at a federal jail in Manhattan in August 2019 while he awaited trial on sex trafficking charges.

" Maxwell, who was described as "dangerous" by the prosecution during her three-week trial last year, helped entice vulnerable teenagers to Epstein's various properties for him to sexually abuse between 1994 and 2004. Jurors heard that the socialite summoned a 14-year-old girl to an orgy, groped another victim, and laid a schoolgirl outfit out for a third accuser before a sexualised massage with Epstein, because she "thought it would be fun". During her high-profile trial late last year, prosecutors successfully proved Maxwell was"the key" to Epstein's scheme of enticing young girls to give him massages, during which he would sexually abuse them. She was convicted of five offences in December last year, including sex trafficking minors, conspiracy to entice a minor to travel to engage in illegal sex acts, and conspiracy to transport a minor with the intent to engage in criminal sexual activity. Maxwell had previously demanded time be deducted from her sentence because she couldnt' hack the conditions of the tough lock-ups she was sent to. Maxwell's lawyers say their client had"a difficult, traumatic childhood with an overbearing, narcissistic, and demanding father". In a sentence memo to the judge Maxwell’s lawyers wrote: “The difference between Ms Maxwell’s isolation and typical prison conditions is so pronounced that they differ not only in degree but in nature.

“This distinction demands a different calibration whereby each day spent in isolation. Money manager Epstein killed himself in prison 2019 aged 66 while awaiting his own sex crimes trial in New York... The prosecution contended in its own court filing last week that Maxwell"was an adult who made her own choices". should result in an enhanced time-served credit.” They also claim a high-ranking prison guard told Maxwell of concerns she would be “shot by sniper”. In April, Judge Nathan rejected a request by Maxwell for a new trial.

Prosecutors previously insisted she should get up to 55 years over the “shockingly predatory” crimes she has not accepted responsibility for. Maxwell was placed on suicide watch ahead of the hearing, and said to have been put in a "suicide smock" after expressing fears wardens were "threatening her safety".. Giuffre previously said the Brit “used her femininity” to procure her to indulge Epstein and her sick abuse fantasies. Her statement reads: “Together, you damaged me physically, mentally, sexually and emotionally. “I never would have met Jeffrey Epstein if not for you.
