Legislation to allow for the issuing of fines for breaches of restrictions to curb spread of Covid-19 is set to be passed by the Oireachtas within days

It will pave the way for proportionate fines for those who hold house parties along with penalties for people who travel beyond the five-kilometer travel limit.

Earlier, the Cabinet has decided to increase the number of people who can attend a funeral during the period of Level 5 restrictions from ten to 25. Ministers met to consider a number of measures arising from the decision to move the country to Level 5 restrictions from midnight tomorrow for six weeks.

Mr O'Brien said that both Minister for Finance Paschal Donohoe and Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform Michael McGrath will be engaging with the banks and mortgage providers to discuss arrangements for mortgage repayments for those affected further by increased restrictions. In the letter, sent on 15 October, Dr Holohan says the National Public Health Emergency Team reiterated its recommendation to apply Level 5 measures across the country for a period of six wees.

Also speaking on RTÉ's Morning Ireland, Sinn Féin finance spokesperson Pearse Doherty welcomed last night's Level 5 announcement, saying it was clear that Level 3 has not worked.

About time, people need to be held accountable for their actions and their disregard for the restrictions. This lockdown shte needs to come to an end fast

She's the same when she's on the radio. She doesn't know when to stf. Up.

Will be interesting to see if a future court of law judges this measure to be treasonable. Substantial fines for venturing past 5 km - must be unconstitutiona. No legal precedent. The Government cannot just rubber stamp any old law; it ,ust be proportionate and for common good

Sadly another incompetent minister.

new laws to end christmas

Very attractive wannabe dictator

Its strange for me that the cops can't walk into a house to break up a noisy house party were there's heavy drinking and probably drugs. A polite knock on the door won't do anything. No wonder the Gardia aren't taken seriously

Can’t believe the negativity about fines for breaching restrictions. Necessary & for the benefit of public health & society until Covid back under control. If you’re having a house party etc you deserve to be fined. It’s basically a fine for being a selfish dickhead

Ponder deeply before inflicting this hell on the country minister -In the social sciences, unintended consequences are outcomes of a purposeful action that are not intended or foreseen.

Yes folks, refuse to end your house party and you'll be fined €50. So ten people at party chip on €5 and party on. Yeah that'll work.... which, the deterent or the response?

If there is no clearly identified victim there is no crime there is no damged party and no breach of the peace. There will be no judge in the country who would touch this legislation.

This pesky thing may get in the way.

How many have actually lived in a police state. Or is it a Hollywood movie your info comes from. We're very lucky to live in a country like this. Enjoying our freedom. Many can't. A police state...... Some need to broaden their horizons a little bit.

Jaysus I was just about to report Justice Minister Helen McEntee missing we hadn't heard from her in so long. I suppose it is hard to get a word in with Leo and Simon lapping up all the airtime.

Especially an 18 hole golf tournament

So we're at the mercy of a garda, who may be having a bad day, to decide if our reason for travelling is satisfactory to him/her?

Nazi

Really? You'll give us a chance to comply? Thanks very much for not just kicking the shit out of us and dragging us off in a van. That's so kind of you.

RTENewsPaulC Ha ha. Who would believe that.

Massive mistake IMO. Time will tell.

7 months too late LeoVaradkar MichealMartinTD we’ll see if works! Not my choice and approval but think is needed in some cases...

France has its minimum procesverbale 135€ from last March imposed after a few days of grace on those determined not to cooperate with Covid19France government regulations ..... those who persist in misbehaviour can be fined up to €1500 and/or jail with a criminal record

Good we need fines urgently to deal with people who just won't comply.

Police state is on its way

Criminalising people exercising more than five kilometers but keeping schools open is really going to get this under control alright. So many people are contracting covid-19 in the great outdoors.

People are broken. Good luck getting paid.

About time. This is months overdue.
