A number of different posts on Facebook with the same text have claimed that the assertion was made at a WHO briefing.

THERE ARE SEVERAL social media posts being shared widely in Ireland that cite a World Health Organization briefing as evidence that Covid-19 is “no more deadly or dangerous” than the seasonal flu when the death rates are compared.

The piece, published on 8 October, cites a number of figures to reach the conclusion that Covid-19 is no more dangerous than the flu, focusing in particular on the infection fatality rate. It should be noted that Dr Ryan did not give figures for the fatality rate of Covid-19 during this part of the briefing, nor did he compare it to the flu.

Our current best estimates tell us that about 10% of the global population may have been infected by this virus. This varies depending on country, it varies from urban to rural, it varies between different groups. A statement from the WHO Dr Ryan said: “Estimates of case fatality ratio and infection fatality ratio during an outbreak are often inaccurate. WHO has issued a scientific brief to help countries estimate these ratios as appropriately and accurately as possible, while accounting for possible biases.” Typically, we look to serological studies [which check for antibodies] to estimate the infection fatality ratio. Mathematical models are also being used to estimate it.

Research has found that the Covid-19 infection fatality rate is between 0.5-1%, while the flu infection fatality rate is between 0.001% and 0.05%. Added to that, a 2014 peer-reviewed study found that 1-10 people died per 100,000 people with flu infections. This would give it an IFR of 0.001-0.01%.

The flu figures have vanished this year?

The flu is more dangerous, the amount of people i know gets the flu every year not one person i know has had covid, plus the number of cases & deaths are exaggerated every day very strange what's going on in the world..

If you use your common sense it's not more dangerous. But it's easier to use as a 'made up enemy' to crash the economy and keep people at their wealth level.

Factcheck :asymptomatic not spread virus 😏 😏 😏 😏

You'd wanna fact check your stories more before you print scandalous allegations against teachers .

Also really admire how your 'fact checks' run right in tandem with WHO and EU policy decisions. What are the odds Fact check their models why don't you '30,000+ Irish people will die', 'Millions of UK brits will die' I'll wait

It's not 'as deadly' though for most age brackets

Why have you allowed comments and then deleted/censored them?

Factcheck :asymptomatic dont spread virus 😏 😏 😏 😏

Why not fact check this - between 01/07-22/11 (nearly 5 months) of the 45,215 people tested Covid+ in Ireland (as per reports provided by hpscireland) 39,773 were under age of 65 (only 28 deaths). The survival rate for u-65s during that period was 99.929%.

No Irish Michael Ryan said he wanted to take ppl from their homes and quarantine them in an undisclosed place.
