The Leaving Certificate exams should go ahead 'if at all possible', a leading expert on the transition from second to higher level education has told RTÉ News - emma_okelly reports.

The Leaving Certificate exams should go ahead "if at all possible", a leading expert on the transition from second to higher level education has told RTÉ News.

Asked if it would be possible for third level colleges to run entry exams - as many did until the early 90s under the 'matric' or matriculation system - Professor Hyland said this was a system that had operated when very small numbers entered third level - fewer than a tenth of today’s numbers - and would not work today.

Mr Hyland said the exam had shown itself to be the best predictor of subsequent academic performance. Speaking to RTÉ News from the garden of her home where she is cocooning, Ms Hyland suggested that the third level institutions could increase the number of places available for disadvantaged students this year.

What a joke of an interview can’t believe RTE would even publish this, hard to imagine that she couldn’t find a solution to an unprecedented situation 20 years prior 🙄😂 and disadvantaged kids? Who cares about them they don’t need to go to college! issu4u

emma_okelly So maybe just test English and maths?

emma_okelly Presume one consequence of all this, one way or the other, is a large increase in the numbers of students seeking to repeat 6th Year next year or at least resitting the LC!? Could be issue for school places

Why is my nan telling me I should do an exam that dictates my future in the middle of a global crisis. Sure she probably didn't even sit the thing herself 😂😂😂

Biased government influencing biased RTE! Listen to the students! Predicted grading.

She needs to retire, she hasnt a clue

emma_okelly Car crash TV. What a biased interview Emma. Has anyone thought of putting the pupils back on school buses? And the more the expert with on about disadvantaged pupils the bigger the hole she dug. Surprised u did not pick her up on it

What an idiot She is so out of touch with reality. My daughter is studying hard for her leaving cert but only 2 of her teachers are doing any classes online . Then theres other schools where the students are having all their classes online. How is that a level playing field

'No appeals, just get on with it, do the best we can, and recognise it is not going to be perfect, no matter what we do,' WHAT!! Can't believe this rubbish.

I think Aine's contribution was ill advised and came across as very much out of touch. Her solution to those who have been disadvantaged in the run up was for more places in colleges for them. totally tone deaf and very little imagination. Sad

Shut up boomer

Expert wants money for marking papers. Pays for holidays

Stop giving incompetent people places to speak. Thank you.

‘The Leaving cert....particular subjects are English and Mathematics, they are the two subjects which are the best predictors of subsequent university and higher level performance’. Are they? Both together or at least one? For all university & third level disciplines?

No, not necessary, they have 6yrs done, their ability is known. Cancel, use predictive grades and move on. mother of hard-working LC here, this delay is damaging.

Snobbery towards young people within socially disadvantaged environments and areas.

predictthegrade

I fully respect that this woman is a professional and no one has a “perfect” solution for this problem, but why are the voices of thousands of students being blatantly ignored, yet this lady gets to openly state that the disadvantaged will suffer on the nations main broadcaster!

emma_okelly As a LC parent I find this very disingenuous- it’s stressful trying to work from home and motivate a teenager who believes they are studying for exams that won’t take place - cancelling the orals was a slippery slope

Good work rte covering the lc . VirginMedia_One VirginMediaNews please follow suit .

this interview is shameful

literally majority of students want exams cancelled and predicted grading. It’s OUR leaving cert, surely we should get a say? leavingcert

Schools in June would be empty enough to adhere to social distancing 🤷‍♀️

Teachers know their LeavingCert students very well, having worked with them at least in 5th &6th year, often longer. They see their ability, know weaknesses, and can generally predict grades accurately. Áine Hyland seems very out of touch with the classroom beyond the theory.

This lady was let go on a rant with no regard for children’s mental healt and well-being in her statement. And unchallenged by the reporter, poor broadcasting

Absolutely out of touch with what students are feeling.

I can't believe that we are living in a world where you can still be discriminated against just for coming from a certain area, going to a certain school etc. The leaving cert is a memory test it has nothing to do with your background. This is disgraceful LeavingCert

This interview is ridiculous! Imagine comparing it with a person who did her lc in 1959 to now! She literally admits that the exam is unfair but says it should go ahead? Says pg has never been used when its used every year? And says no appeals 'just get on with it'? PLEASE

Leaving cert. The whole world is cancelled, and she’s talking about the “leaving cert”. Really!

Well done to all those students who are spending their time wisely studying to the best of their ability👏 Those looking for it to be cancelled and handed to them will someday learn that that type of work ethic gets you nowhere in life, and fast

The fact the so called “expert” thinks that disadvantaged kids should be left to become more disadvantaged is shocking. And also where’s the imagination? To say the leaving cert as it is now is the best solution is nonsense. These kind of people simply hate change LeavingCert

She literally admits there will be disadvantages and says the exams should go ahead? How on earth will having the exams go ahead in June be worse than predicted grades for all including disadvantaged

Sorry but the discrimination against those without, is immense. How are teenagers in rural situations or teenagers without a laptop, or teenagers with no WiFi, or all of the above, supposed to study or partake in online classes? They cannot be expected to teach themselves...

Only spoke with a parent last week who has no WiFi and no laptop . Son sitting LC , no access to online facility ... Sure it will be grand 🙄

The idea that teenagers are expected to do Junior Cert or Leaving Cert is delusional. I would genuinely advise parents to protect their children’s mental health at this time, as I do, and don’t be beholden to a government that doesn’t care about the reality and impact of this.

Great piece. Thanks ainehyland emma_okelly and

Eh base it on previous exam results the students have done

What medical qualifications has she got? Does she know something we don’t? Holding exams is the least of worries for anyone at the moment but to put anyone’s minds at ease just announce the results will be based on previous results and assessments 👍

Interesting to see how the anonymous twitter mob questions the knowledge of industry professionals. Are we like our neighbours saying we have ‘had enough of experts’? Holding the LC exams at the most appropriate time (not necessarily June) is the least worst outcome for pupils.

Did she complete any state exam in the middle of a global pandemic? No. So there’s no ground to what she’s saying.

SimonHarrisTD did a q&a for younger kids last week to hear their concerns. McHughJoeTD should do one with LeavingCert students this week.

Use the local gaa centres.....

As I stated earlier, I don't have a degree/masters in 7 subjects... How can I teach myself the courses to finish them in time for the exams in June? They simply cannot go ahead in June and it doesn't take an expert to know that!

Expert lol

Expert on what exactly? Talking shite

How exactly?

Stop whining and get on with it. If you haven’t the course finished you’ve definitely got approx. 80% covered. If you went into the exam knowing that much you’d do ridiculously well. Always looking for an easy way out! Plus hard work pays off! Work at home through remote learning

hold it in croker this summer nice and spacey

Lovely lady, thank her for her time, agree with her, they must go ahead, maybe if delayed even?

Expert me hole

The expert should have read the following.

'Expert'

Junior?

Gman

emma_okelly This boomer cares more about tradition than people's lives

emma_okelly They totally jumped the gun in the UK by stopping the A Level examinations. Lunacy.

emma_okelly What about the students who have vulnerable adults living with them?

emma_okelly Sweden has still schools open, I think we can risk a few tests.
