General Election 2020 promises over pension age in doubt as coronavirus costs spiral out of control

Election promises to reverse plans to raise the pension age to 67 have been thrown into doubt as Covid-19 costs spiral out of control.

On Saturday, Finance Minister Paschal Donohoe spoke with negotiators from Fine Gael, Fianna Fail and the Green Party. Government formation talks are now ongoing, and updated information on Covid-19 related welfare payments will be presented to negotiators later this week.But Deputy Nash, Labour’s spokesman on employment and social protection, said raising the pension age to 67 would be a “slap in the face” for workers.

During the election, Fianna Fail had initially been reluctant to stand in the way of plans to raise the age to 67 from the start of next year.
