DUP leader Jeffrey Donaldson has said he will look at all options – including a period in opposition – after the upcoming Stormont assembly election

Mr Donaldson was asked whether he would accept the position of Deputy First Minister if Sinn Féin was returned as the largest party after the poll in May.

He said other parties had spent periods in opposition in the past and that option was one that he could consider. "But those rules give us alternatives they give us options and I would remind you that pretty much all of the other parties have opted out of the executive in certain circumstances, have gone into opposition," Mr Donaldson said.

Mr Donaldson also said he would want to hear from the British government this week on whether there had been progress in talks with the EU on the Northern Ireland Protocol.

Leave the sectarian DUP in the gutter and let’s get in with it

Fine Gael won't be happy with that.

The way he's polling he'd be lucky to be the DUPs tea boy after the next election. Fear not, for he'll be swept off to the house of Lords within the next few years to hideout along with Droopy Dog whilst the DUP saunter into the abyss along with the rest of the dinosaurs. 🙏🏽
