The Dáil is to consider a motion to increase the penalties for the theft of pets, after 244 dogs were reported stolen in 2020.

The Regional Group of TDs wants the Government to use a bill that is currently being considered by the Oireachtas as a legal mechanism to change the law quickly and act as a further deterrent against pet theft.

Independent TD Denis Naughten said current legislation does not take into account "the emotional distress of the theft of a family pet" and called for "significant penalties" for those who steal or re-sell stolen pets. The Criminal Justice Bill 2020 is being brought before the Dáil this week and the Regional TDs motion to amend the legislation will be considered on Wednesday.

My cats and dog are part of my family, more than a TV. Kidnapping of same should be a higher crime. Do animal smugglers have their vans confiscated, should.

And rightly so ! If anyone touched my dog it wouldn't be prison or a fine they would have to worry about!

Definitely, it’s kidnapping!🐾

ChildOfAlba This is happening in Scotland as well, it's horrendous, hard to iamgine havg yr beloved pet stolen thy r so intelligent thy wld be incredibly distraught...it has to be stopped....

Do it, arrest them, charge them, name them and lock them up for 12mts. Be out after 6mths anyway.

Possibly you meant tougher, but I'm okay with rougher.

If someone ever took my dog the increased dail penalties would be the least of their worries...

About time.

Who will guard guard dogs?

I thought all this was boxed off?

Why not start with a proper sentencing period for stealing cars and robbing shops, then you have a measure to sentence these thugs. gardarep need to work with the Justice Dept to set the bar.

Anyone against this either nabs dogs themselves or wants the world to burn.

Breeders are the cause of this. £2500 for a wee dug? I mean ffs

It should not be a poxy considered more strong laws are needed right away

Nothing to consider

Flogging or tar and feathering ?

Everyone in the country knows who is stealing them and knows they are not going to pay any fine so a joke of legislation

Now that's being considered I think Boris Johnson should consider the same if not more. I keep seeing to many dogs that have been stolen in Twitter. Enough is enough there are too many and nothing seems to be getting done to combat it....

About time!

Not long ago they used to hang horse thieves a dog is more important to it’s owner

It should be the same as kidnapping a child. Or more severe.

Glic16 Any chance they can enforce the fines on people who leave their dogs shit all over the footpath or hang their shit bags off trees and fences ?

Glic16 Get it done, these pets are some folks only companions, keeping them sane in this evil world.

Damn straight. Make the penalties for such crimes hurt too. Anybody who kidnaps somebody's pet needs to be put in a world of pain.

I think they also need to make tough sentences and punishments for animal abusers! It makes me so sick to see people only getting fines and suspended sentences.

A 5 iron in the forehead for anyone who even attempts to take my dog.

Good!

At least 10 years in jail would sort out these scumbags

There needs to be a mandatory jail term. When a dog is stolen a part of your family is stolen. The emotional distress is overwhelming. If they are just going to come up with a fine of a few hundred euro it will be a waste of all the tax payers time.

Kidnapping a child and stealing a dog should carry the same sentence.

And close the puppy farms. Take the €€ value out of dogs. It’s such a sad existence for the poor dogs who are kept only for breeding DublinSPCA WAWRescue DogsTrust_IE DoneDeal agriculture_ie

No need to consider, just do it! 👊👊👊

Do it. Animal welfare is abysmal and the deterrents are pathetic. And politicians have been talking about this while failing miserably to do anything about it for far too long.

As usual in Ireland weak or dated legislation is the root of most ills.

I’d prefer if the Dail focused on increasing penalties for dog owners caught shitting up our streets.

Get it done, name shame chip and put a collar on them.

They need to put something in place that you have some kind of documentation for the dogs available before you can sell or buy. If the market is not there then demand is not there. Jail for theft and large fines for those receiving undocumented dogs (once in place).

Consider what..

The only reason this all started to happen was because some idiots decided to up the price of puppies. Selfish money grabbing twats. They should be penalised aswell for inflating the prices. Resulting in this.

Do it! Fuck considering. Clamp down on puppy farms too please.

How about you remove the restricted breed list so DCC can stop taking dogs from good homes and putting them in Ashton pound where there never seen again?

Do it.

Tougher laws don't work.... Find out why dogs are stolen..... Remove that reason.

6 months inside and 10k fine per pet stolen for 1st offence. 18 months and 30k fine for second offence. If the animal cannot be returned after discovery of the thief 18 months and 25k compensation.

Did anyone else read that as 'ruffer'?

Shoot the c*nts

Do it. Make it law!

Great news and about time. 🐕

Pets are family members. So kidnapping and trafficking are applicable. Generally I don’t condone capital punishment, but if someone stole my pet I’d gladly see them put to death.

Consider🙈 just do it..

Why do people have their pets outside? My dog is only out when I walk him.

Consider?! Do!! How many more hearts broken 💔 and pets abused by the lowest of the low 🤬 while the government continue to procrastinate. Please, please stop being reactive and be proactive simoncoveney HMcEntee 🐾🐾 no more businessasusual

5 yes in jail for every dog stolen, no early release crap, burglary 10yrs for every house, no early release either.

Can you report human trafficking in Ireland, once we stop this vile crime then we can start on saving the dogs.

the GARDAÍ do not take it seriously at all, I know because you can even give them the license plate number and they still do nothing and on top of that this bull

Why would they even 'consider' it... Just do it! You're talking about 'people' that steal dogs from their owners who love them and who they love, and then mistreat them, or worse, just to try and make a few €€€. i.e. the absolute scum of the earth!

Woof woof

stealing someone pet is the same as stealing their child as far as I am concerned, pets are family

I know older relatives who’s dogs and cats are their best friends. It should be treated as a crime with emotional effects, not just theft of property.

Yes let’s increase penalties for dog abduction. When I have you.. Could RTE please ask someone in government why The EU had not called out China for their lack of transparency during pandemic Are we losing our morals, ethics and principles for the chance to trade with them

Be more fitting to debate under attending TDs and expenses claiming

This would be morally correct and universally popular. What's to consider? Do we really have to carefully balance the rights of dog thieves?

Whats for dinner? A common refrain among Korean families in Dalkey😜😆

capital punishment is too much right...

Make them severe, not a slap on the wrist and a small fine!

Rathkeale will need a new business model...

Anyone who steals or harms a dog should be fucking whipped.

Kelly accuses Donnelly of 'incompetence' during heated row in Dáil over Covid vaccine roll-outLabour leader Alan Kelly has accused Health Minister Stephen Donnelly of being 'incompetent' during a heated exchange over the Covid-19 vaccine rollout plan in the Dáil Not fond of the water tax man ,but he is impressive here Stephen Donnelly face says it all, he is in over his head 😒 alankellylabour It's not just about vaccine supply it's a lot about vaccinators. The fact that people who could vaccinate have to go through such a rigmarole to be okayed is ridiculous, a year ago the HSE should have realised we'd need a mass vaccination programme in Ireland.
